Hi,

I have been trying for the past 2 years to get my site listed in DMOZ. I submit it every 3 months but i never hear anything back and it is still not listed.

I feel my site is of a higher quality and more relevant than quite a few of those already listed there so what is going wrong?

I have also spent hours preparing meticulously prepared editor applications for this directory just to be told that i should start off with a less popular category.

I am starting to get the feeling that all the editors are my competition and they dont want me to get listed. Perhaps im just paranoid.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Thanks,

G

I submitted my site and was accepted within three weeks. Luck of the draw I guess.

It's been over a year. Still not listed.

The only site I've managed to get listed on dmoz is my husbands, which was about 3 or 4 years ago. Nothing I've submitted since then has been listed.

I've pretty much given up on dmoz.

You have to have like a perfect website to get listed in dmoz. I have yet to have my website listed but I am anticipating for when it does!

I have a possible solution (it worked for me). I submited about every month for two years and nothing. I was trying to get listed into the "Webmaster Resources" section. I was fed up. So here is what I did to finally get listed. I searched DMOZ for catagories "completely unrelated" to mine with a lot of editors listed at the bottom. For example "Kids & Teens" has a lot of editors. Then I contacted each editor, one at a time, about once a week (links at the bottom of the catagory). In each I kindly explained my anguish (being ignored for 2 years), my URL, and the catagory it should belisted in. Then (after the second editor) I received an email stating that they understood and they forwarded it to the correct editors. One week after that I was listed.

Here are two reasons why I think this worked.

1. The catagory editors were kind. Why, they edited for "Kids" or a similar catagory (I can't remeber which I chose, it's been three years).

2. The message was sent to the correct editors from another editor so it was taken seriously.

So if you try this, let me know how it works out for everyone.

Nic-ky, I disagree. For one thing DMOZ lists sites on their high PR pages (mine is on a PR 5). Another is because Google feels that DMOZ is important enough to use for their directory, they MAY give the same consideration for the sites that are listed there. Most importantly, the Open Directory Project (a.k.a. DMOZ) allows ANYONE to use DMOZ's directory on their own sites (and many do). Just follow the link below (I searched Google for "Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Authoring/Webmaster_Resources/") an exact location on DMOZ. The results show over 7000 pages using DMOZ, and my site is on every one. Keep in mind, this is a deep crawl as well. Other catagories may show many more results. In addition, take a look at the PR of the sites with my DMOZ listing on them. Not too shabby for the most part.

I almost forgot, you mentioned "Just get listed with google". Because Google uses DMOZ for there directory and the bots index DMOZ often,... I think you get the point.

Before blindly email editors of non-related categories, you'd probably be better off by posting your grievence at the DMOZ forums:

However, to my point, dmoz is surely worth your effort. If you failed to be accepted by it in a relatively long time, please turn to its editors for help. They are said to be quite kind.
Good luck everyone!

I have submitted my site to both DMOZ and Yahoo (free). This was a few months back. Not really "expecting" to be listed in either one. And certainly not expecting to be listed without waiting at least a year or two. I recently did post a message on the Resource Zone and my site is still awaiting review, which i guess is good in a way. I know they haven't rejected my submission.

As far as Yahoo goes, how much time do you think they spend on FREE listings when they have so many people paying 300 bucks to be listed.

If I never get into these directories it won't kill me. I certainly am not alone. Heck, I know a few people that have been awaiting review in DMOZ for YEARS!!! (more than just a couple).

It can take a some time. If you don't hear from them in about 30 days, try another approach. And remeber, DMOZ is human edited, so make sure your site not only looks good, but has good content and information. It is easier to impress a robot, but humans... well, you know.
