Web Directories

I would like to start a web UK directory but need advice on how to initially populate it with some links.

Do you buy links?
Do you just build it and they will come?
Do you purchase an established directory?

No, no & no, and above all DO NOT accept "submissions" or "suggestions" AT ALL, by all have a submission/suggestion form but make it so it simply discards the junk ie: all of them.

You go and locate pages and sites that YOU like and would recommend to others. Do NOT expect anything in return for listing them or ask for anything from the owners of the URIs you list.

That way you are building a true resource which will build up a far better reputation than ANY of the thousands of "SEO friendly" junk piles that currently exist will ever hope to achieve

Thanks for your reply chrishirst. I doubt I have time to give a directory the attention it deserves to build a 'true resource' . I imagine it to be many Years to compile a half decent niche directory.

I do know what you mean when you talk of the 'SEO friendly junk piles' that exsist.

No. Once you have your directory running submit it to the directory-of-directories. You will get the links.

Yes. Upon submission the directory lists, you will ton of submissions. Its left to you to accept or reject them.

Depends, if you have the time you can build one, if not, you can buy them, they won't cost much.

You dont want to buy links, that's for sure. Rank your site a little bit higher by submitting it to other directories, create its web presence by blogging about it, etc. Do some promos on your site like free submission.

Thank you for all your replies. I have read a lot about directories, positive and negative and have taken into account the replies here.

I have decided to start one, a niche directory as many are just general in type. I have chosen a topic I understand and think that this is a good way to start.

I have created a directory and I didn't buy any links yet. I think if it gets a good page rank (at least 1 or 2) then visitor will automatically come and submit their websites link. I have to do link building for this directory to get a good PR.

You have to do marketing of your directories too, you have to do SEO too so that it would have higher pr and it would be visible in search engines so that your directory would be searches.

Also, you can list your directory to directory critique and other similar sites.
