I have been submitting to some of the directories lately.
Some of them required a registration amount.
Will i get any benefit if I pay for it?
Also there are a lot of free directories available for listing.

I don't really recommend paying for directory listing. Their benefits tend to be very temporary. I suggest you allot your money on methods that deliver better results. Hire an SEO expert to do the job.

I agree, you might as well just stick with free directories. I mean there are many out there for free, I doubt you'll ever run out of directories to submit to.

There are two main reasons to list your web site in a paid for directory:

1. Exposure. If you list your rentals directory which has lots of visitors who are looking to rent your type of property, then you’re likely to increase the number of punters your gite gets in front of. There are obviously a few provisos to that statement and in future articles I’ll cover what you should check for before handing over your gite marketing budget.

2. Pagerank. In one of my articles on SEO, I talk about the importance of ‘important’ sites linking to your web site and the ‘pagerank’ mechanism that Google uses to allocate ‘importance’. The simple principal is that links from high page rank web sites to yours will improve your own page rank and therefore ensure you appear higher in search results for specific search terms.

Then I found this: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/text-links-and-pagerank/

One paid directory that is worth it is the yahoo directory. You may not get many if any traffic from the directory but after we posted our site to the directory within 2 or so months we started ranking well on yahoo. It could be that yahoo just recognizes most of our hard work where as Google has not therefore we are ranking better but it just seems coincidental.

If the directory has a high PR (>=4) and has many visitors (check Alexa), then it might worth a buck. Otherwise just submit to free directories.

Paid directories are not better than free directories. There are thousands of good and free link directories on the Internet, so I'd recommend focusing on these. If you can afford, get some automated tools (like social bookmarking software) and start building backlinks in smart way.

I never tried using paid directory. Since I'm just submitting my handled sites in a free one. And I'm happy with the result. So why don't you submit your site in a free one. Then, if you're done with it, try some different process that you can gain your backlinks.

Yes, it's much better to submit your site to free directories instead of paid. Results will be very similar and you will save lots of $$$

I wouldn't pay for a listing in a web directory unless the page where I'm listed comes up in Google for some of the text on the page. That way I know Google respects the page and that it should pass some good link juice.

Well, if you choose which directory to submit it to then I guess that there is a chance that it could be helpful. There are tons of directories out there that asks for money in return, they will list you, but they wouldn't really be that helpful. What you can do prior to paying is that you can check the site out first. Does it receive plenty of traffic? Does it have a nice PR? Are its inner pages getting crawled and indexed?

For Free directories you will have to wait for a while for your site to get listed. it may be approved or your link will be lost in a sea of other links because free directories are often so crowded and the link value will be low for that page where your site will show.

Links from paid directories are given more value by search engines than links from free directories. Just be sure that it is maintained by professionals and have a professional-quality layout. And it should be able to guarantee you a turnaround time of 24 to 48 hours between the time you submit your site and the time your site is listed in the directory.
