I have been sitting here for about 2 hours submitting my website to countless web directories... and am beginning to wonder... is this worth the time? What are the chances that someone is actually going to visit one of these directories and actually find my website on the list and go to it. If I submitted my website to 200 directories, the chances of me getting any traffic from them is very slim.

The only thing that I can think of is that it might help my pagerank by getting more pages to link to my website?

Anyone care to comment on this?

It's not a waste of time you just find some good quality directory out there. Directory submission is my least priority.

I think submitting your site to directories is and isn't time wasted. From my experience I have not got very many visitors though directories. However decent directories can improve you SEO and move your website up the rankings, and that is where you can increase the amount of visitors your site gets. The most frustrating aspect of directories is that most of them will not list your site.

I would concentrate on the very big ones like: DMOZ and Yahoo directory and the very specific directories that are directly related to your site.

I have created a directory myself that focuses on web design firms in Sussex (UK). Although it only has a PR of 3, because it is so specific to those firms linking it will not only help their SEO more than a general directory, but it actually will attract traffic.

It is still worth it.

It's just that not all the time directories will approve your submissions.

Let me put it to you this way:
You will have 200 more chances than if you don't submit at all

As to PR, only maybe 5 of them will give you fully powered backlink

It is if they're going to use your list

The problem with your list:
1. It's stuffed with dead on arrival directories
2. It's missing directories that will give site solid backlink

Lets just say, after reviewing your list I can say if someone spent whole month submitting URL using your list, the best one will get is maybe, that is MAYBE 20 backlinks.

I am using list of 100 directories that will guaranty me 100 backlinks.

Other than that, you have "good" (for suckers and brainless posters who will thank Telephone Post for being there) list

Ranter is dead on and heck I'd love to see that list of 100 directories that actually approve submissions.

What i hate about doing directory submission is that some sites will never approve your site. Check to see if they have hundreds of sites pending approval. Avoid those ones.

Yes it will help but only with your SERP for keyword phrases in your submission title. I've tested it and it can make you rank for long tail keyword phrases.

I do not see a point in doing it yourself - yes there are a few good directories and all of the them will eventually register with the search engines, but your time is a lot better spent on other things. Get someone else to do the directories for you - there are lots of companies which will do a good job in SEO friendly submissions.

Well submitting to directories is definitely worth it but it is important that you submit it to directories with good reputation....not one that gives you 1000 links overnight

Try to avoid bulky submission services, as it is very difficult to check the quality of such directories. In addition, there is no assurance that your web site will rank among these services. Plus most engines don't respect directories much anymore.

So what or where is this "good" list of the 100 directories? I have been searching and can't seem to find them.

I feel like I am in a few good ones but I really think more needs to be done. So far (and I will probably make a new thread on this topic) I am listed with...

dmoz.org
botw.org
clush.com
alive.com
uscity.net
webworldindex.com
wikipedia.org <-- I know it's not a directory but it is a reference.

Other then yahoo directory which is about $200 a year where can/should I submit to?

Thanks Kane

Hey Kane,

Try the Firefox plugin SEOQuake.
Then go to Google, put as a search term site:www.directory.com and sort it by PR (with the help of the PR arrows) to find any link juice.

I recently read some an entry by Matt Cutts on his blog and he basically said that paid links on directories that flow page rank are are fine as long as they contain quality sites, they are sites that are roughly related to each other, and not all sites are accepted (there is some human quality control). The same, you would think, applies to non paid directories as well. So it's worth it as long as you are submitting to good quality directories. It's really only worth it if you're submitting to quality sites, preferably those that are relevant to your site. Then you will get some quality backlinks. But if you're submitting to over 200, then yes that's kind of a waste because they can't all be quality ones.

If you have a new website, chances are that it doesn't have a lot of visitors yet, and you want it to be visible to as many surfers as the Internet will permit. Short of knocking on everyone's door and giving them your URL address verbally, your best avenue for getting more visitors is through search engines. So don't think it's a waste of time, as time goes by you will see it's all worth it
