I know.. I know.. complete noob question but it is bugging me really bad.

When submitting to a directory, most directories want you to put a reciprocal link on your website. Does this reciprocal link have to be on the homepage or can it be placed in an article or anywhere else within the content of the website?

Each directory will have their own idea of what they want. READ their requirements

If directory owners had any sense at all, unfortunately most of them seem to be lacking in this and only think in terms of what (they think) Search Engines "want" (and get it wildly wrong), they would ask for a link from a page that would be useful in terms of getting qualified visitors.

So this could technically be on a good quality article that has a lot of visitor views, not necessarily on the homepage or an affiliates/partners section.

Hi,

I will not recommend to put directories link to your homepage.

According to me you can put directories links to any other pages like resource.html or other related page. Generally most of webmasters use this types of way to exchange links with other sites or directories but some reputed sites can ask for home page link also (About 10 to 20% only).

Thanks

A reciprocal link is an agreement between two webmasters to provide a hyperlink within their own website to each other's web site. Generally this is done to provide readers with quick access to related sites, or to show a partnership between two sites. Reciprocal links can also help to increase traffic to your web site in two ways. First you will probably have some viewers visit your site from clicking the reciprocal link directly. Secondly, most Internet search engines also take into account the number of web sites which contain links to your web site; the more hyperlinks to your site found, the higher up in the search engine rankings (depending on the search term) you'll find your site.

So in this sense, it is a very good idea to submit to all of the web directories as possible?

Reciprocal links are links with other sites which are usually are related to the theme of your website. The concept is very easy to understand, you link to a site and that site links back to you. The idea behind this goes back to you scratch my back I scratch yours. Some sites have specific requirements when linking. For example some sites might have restrictions based on content, page rank, or even domain names.

Nope I guess. But, reciprocal links although not as effective as they used to be are still effective enough to warrant the time and effort to create the relationship with other websites. One must be very picky about one's site selection and keeping the content related to your site is a must.

Yes it is..

Directory submissions are an important part of the link building process offered by many SEOs. Listing in good directories automatically brings in quality backlinks, increasing link popularity, increase your ranking in search engines, traffics and many more which all of are describe as belows, 1. To get your website indexed Search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN send out spiders-crawlers (Genarally between 10 to 20 days) to search the web for new sites that come up everyday. For example, If you using the “add URL” page to submit your website to Google then it takes 4-6 weeks to listing site in it. When using directory submissions, you can get your website listed in Google and other major search engines in a matter of days sometimes because of major search engines find new websites through incoming links and directory submission is best way to get incoming link. if your site is new or just been launched, a web directory link would help the search engine in finding your site and including it in its database. So given the benefit of web directory links, it only makes sense to get your site submitted to as many directories as possible.

A reciprocal link is where website [A] links to website [b], which in turn links to website [A].

Reciprocal links can improve a website’s search relevance ranking, moving the website up the list of results on a search engine results page (SERP).

Reciprocal links with third-party sites can and should only be placed to inner pages. The submission form will check its placement automatically. Stay away from site-wide linking though.
