i still believe in the power of directory submissions because they are the basic forms of link building as well as not all directories are link farms, but i do admit some of them are closing due to spam

Same with me. I still do directory submission because it's part of link building and through this method, you can gain more one-way links.

they can be no more important than was some years ago, but they're still important. Google still atribute a great value to the most of them.

well, are paid directories better?

see it like it is, most paid directories started being a free directory, so if all free directories are crap, then so are the paid ones.

paid or not doesn't make any difference in the quality of the directory.

point being; well there are about 5.000 free directories out there ... only 1.500 of them are worth submitting to, an other 1.000 are not too bad, nothing lost if you submit there, but not much gained either ... the 2.500 ones are indeed crap

but to submit to the top 1.500 will help your ranking, so it's good ... what else you want?

Directories are among the easiest sources of one-way links. They don't have that much value if you just submit to 10 or 20. Collectively, their value add up. Choosing the directory to submit to should be a main factor as well.

Try to also vary on your anchor texts as this will help in the ranking process.

I can do 20 manual submissions per hour so submitting to 2000 directories will take 100h of my time. I should invoice at least $15 per hour for such kind of work so the marketing budget will be around $1500.
Writing articles to article directories, I could write 30 articles with same budget.
So it's simple math which marketing strategy will give me best ROI.
So far my experiences are showing that you can get same amount of visitors from some directory listings (1 of 20 submissions) and from an article submitted to proper article directory.
