Hey everyone,
I'm new here, and just launched my new graphics site (link is in the sig). I've noticed that a lot of web directories generally have high page ranks (>4). It would be great for me to submit my website to these directories to up my page rank. (Thus, generating more ad revenue)

My question is how many directories is your site submitted to, and how many hits/visitors have you gotten from directories? The idea of directories sounds really nice, but honestly - I don't browse them. If I want to find a website, I use google (How I found this one). Does anybody actually browse through web directories? The idea sounds great, but I don't want to use up my time if nobody actually browses them and clicks on your link.

Thanks,
-Snowy

PR won't help to generate ad revenue or anything else for that matter.

I don't know of anybody who does, and that includes Internet savvy people as well

I have quite a few listings from directories for several sites and the sum total of direct traffic for them all is about 50 over 4 or 5 years.
And they were all to one site and from one directory and not one of them converted.

The "home" page might have, but the page where your link might be probably hasn't.

Don't some ad networks base their price off page rank, though?

Most web directories are useless. Yahoo and Dmoz are about the only ones that are worth getting into but are also harder.

You'd get about 100 to 150 hits per day from either of these.

You must be joking, right? Please tell me that you are.

We have our web hosting site in DMOZ (in 2 different categories) for 7 years now and I can’t recall anyone in our company told me that we had even one visit from DMOZ. And as to Yahoo, we are getting on average only 200 hits per month.

Where are you getting your numbers from?

I have Yahoo Directory listings that send me 0 traffic. The value is in having an authority link.

Snowy, directories won't send you much (if any) traffic. Directories will help you rank for important keywords. Just submit with your important keywords as the title, and monitor your results. I think you will be pleased!

And don't chase pagerank. Many new directories are heavily promoted and have a higher pagerank then what appears on the toolbar.

DMOZ is just hype, i never get any result from there. Yahoo is good but too expensive and i would prefer to get links from 10 to 15 directories rather than just one backlink from yahoo.

Directories are kind of like a phone book. If you're listed, people have a better time finding you.

Yellow page ads can be quite expensive and there's no real way to judge how many customers you've drawn in on that ad. The one great thing about directories is that it's a "related" link in your category, so it should help "theme" your site to some degree. They might not turn in large amounts of traffic, but will help with link popularity, which in turn should help with everything else..

I dont think that most of web directories are useless because it gives a backlink that have a also a weight in different search engines.

I think 100-150 should not the correct figure. Internet users use search engines to find the website. 10-15 hits per day will be acceptable.

The role of directories are to collect back links to improve ranking.
