1). No. But it give you some idea if G. know about site
2). Yes, this is site we were working on
3). Every page in our directory has been indexed by G. and Yahoo and your site always come up in search results but not on page #1 of course.

Actually it does work. Depended on the keywords used it sure can work. Many people still use links including me. By getting a keyword or keyword niche you can easily get on the first page of google for that specific topic. Are directories really important? Absolutely----when you attempt to sell your website Pagerank is everything. Alexa does'nt hurt but pagerank tells more. I still believe in directories to a degree. Make sure the directory has a pagerank before submitting--some will fool you.

even lousy link to your site is better than no link at all
directories give you that link and if search engines won't count that link, not a big deal because you may get visitors to your site sent to you by that lousy link and that is what counts after the end of the day

Google will penalize your SERPs for using spammy practices (or so the word on the street is). Blasting your site onto hundreds of sites that have nothing to do with yours, and that exist for no real purpose will possibly hurt you.

why would Google penalize your site for link from directory? directories, at least most of them, excluded from bad links source list and i doubt considered by Google spammy.
link from DMOZ does it make your site spammy

this thread and my post about directories and not about "sites" as you mention and even thou i may agree with your point in general it still has nothing to do with directories

Submissions haven't benefitted me much, i've continously have had to resort to other measures of generating my own traffic

so...is there a definitive answer to this question? Or does it just depend on who you are

If they do do that, I'd guess the penalty is minimal at best. What's to stop someone from doing that for a competitor's site? If Google starts penalizing for inbound links, they open up a huge can of worms.

I've not really noticed much improvements from manually submission to directories, from general forum posts back links seem to be the answer.
