It won't work, dude. DMOZ editors are already aware of it and it can only be used on downstream data (not actual DMOZ root data).

Apparently its run by a disgruntled ex editor .... its his 3rd or 4th attempt to do a directory to get back at DMOZ (he failed on all others) ... he needs to move on.

Not only that, you can pay to get a competitor knocked off.

By the way, in case anyone was wondering how I knew DMOZ editors knew about it and doesn't know who cbp is...cbp is a (former?) DMOZ editor, and there is at least one other DMOZ editor that I can confirm does know about it.

I am an ex-editor, but do know of a senior editor who was going to raise it in the internal DMOZ forum (not sure why as the site is in compliance with the licence to use the DMOZ database)

Its just a money making scam ... there will be some who will confuse it with DMOZ and pay the monies. .... and then start posting in forums blaming DMOZ for everything! .... don't figure!

I tend to agree. This will only cater to the clueless SEO crowd.

I guess I'm part of the clueless SEO crowd then.

I bought an entry for about 7 US$, and eagerly awaited for the entry to pop up on a google search. That was about three months ago!

My entry has NOT appeared in a google search for nomoz.

If you are considering buying a NOMOZ listing to improve your site's page rank or improve your site's rank in google results (and I can't imagine any other reason why you would do it), then don't bother.

Complete waste of time and money.

Yeah - it's misleading because there are sites in google showing as being part of the Nomoz list BUT, they are the sites that are ALREADY listed in DMOZ as well.

The sales pitch on the site is seductive too - all about how unfriendly and unwieldly DMOZ is and how NOMOZ is the answer.

NOMOZ is NOT the answer.

It has no acceptance, and listing your site in NOMOZ will NOT improve your site's pagerank or ranking in Google - trust me, I paid and found out the hard way.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you (ruethewhirl551). After taking a look to nomoz.org from google point of view. I am able to tell nomoz.org site is not penalized by google. Its home page hast a pagerank 5/10 which is a good ranking. Google has indexed over 31,400 pages from nomoz.org.

I wouldn't buy a link at nomoz.org because I think it's not worthy for my site right know —from a pagerank point of view, at least. But I don't see many people complaining about them, beside you.

Another thing which is worth mentioning is: nomoz.org submission form starts by telling you the submission fee in the first paragraph. Scam sites usually make you go through several steps before asking for money. nomoz.org doesn't do that.

You said you submitted to nomoz.org and the you wen't to google to see your site in the result page. I don't see why did you such a thing. There is no such a promise in nomoz.org site. You pay to be listed in nomoz and that's all. Just a link to your page, no warranty to be included in google. There is no speach in nomoz suggesting you will be listed in dmoz after submitting/paying.

This very discussion started January 2008 and today (one and a half year after) nomoz site is still on-line and no complaints about it. I would like to hear of other people who payed for a link in nomoz and what became of that.

Brief about my dmoz experience, spanish text.

There's one point on which I have to agree with ruethewhirl551. Nomoz is not the answer as far as I can see.

I went to update some information on nomoz and was frustrated because there's no option to just edit a description--you have to lock the site first, which costs money unless you can convince them that you're nonprofit. All the sites I'm interested in are nonprofit and I had planned to fix a few dozen incorrect listings because they were out of date but I certainly won't be doing that because most of them aren't mine and I don't want to lock a listing belonging to someone else. That means nomoz will stay inaccurate, probably forever.

I have a question as well--has anyone tried paying to take a competitor off the list? What happens when your competitor turns around and does the same to you? Who wins? Is it an endless cycle? Is there anything to prevent a competitor from locking my site and changing the description to something incorrect?

It seems to me that nomoz is useless at best and harmful at worst--they have gotten rid of all that was good about dmoz along with the bad, and I wouldn't want to be listed on nomoz because of all the inaccurate stuff there. Maybe we need a middle ground between dmoz and nomoz--perhaps something more like wikipedia, with reasonable editing and peer review (I can dream).

What is hard about it? Find the category that best suits your site and then use the 'suggest url' link. That is no harder than any other directory.
