mine would have to be word of mouth and links from other sites.

i never get a good placement on search engines

but with cdcopyworld.com im getting 600+ visitors per day. dont know from where! i think it might be just people typing it in there browser to see if any thing is there. cause cd copying is a big thing these days

cheers

Google is by far the best source of traffic I get, and at times I have seen my hits from Google exceed the number of hits from my within my own site!

My link on MSN is relatively new (within the last month or so) and was readded after I got my site listed in the Looksmart directory through Zeal. I used to do quite well with MSN last year but for some reason it dropped me (how long have they been using Looksmart?).

My best non search engine referral has to be the link from the definition of "flat-file database" at Webopedia... they come from a variety of domains but it is easy enough to spot which have come from that link as they all have a spelling variant of webopedia in the domain name. My top visited page after my homepage is that page on database types... perhaps I should do some more research and follow it up...

two hit exchanges, safelist posting, and buying paid advertising with paid to read email companies.

One hit exchange also gives me extra for referrals and it is fun because I earn traffic while I am playing poker.

The other is less than interesting but the guy behind it is nice so I stay with it. I recently added a third because I like the medeval theme of the site but have yet to put it to use.

Safelists have become a staple to me and I have joined many of them for free. Some I have paid for though. I have made this into a science.

It has become easier since the invention and my subsequent purchase of a safelist auto submitter. Now I just set my ad and start the auto mailing. Then I go make dinner or watch a favorite TV show.

And the best although not free is sending a paid advertisement to the member base of a paid to read email company.

This is email advertising, which is purported to be the best according to all I have read, it is opt-in so you cannot be accused of spamming as each member is paid to read your ad, your link is visited because they are paid to do so, and the response is excellent.

Two times I used it were extraordinary. I received more than 100 level one referrals with each ad run only one time. Each ad was promoting a different program and I now have more than 100 referrals in each. That is more than enough for me.

It is also targeted because these people are out to make money so if you have an opportunity that makes money you will get more sign ups.

Even if not though, they are people too with other interests. I plan to advertise my gift shop through them if I ever get it built. LOL.

As a result of all of the above I have one page that has received more than 4500 hits just since its creation on the 18th of this month.

Try joining a few Traffic Exchanges. Most are junk but there are a few good ones that won't take up too much time.

Start Page things are not a good idea. I found them to be not that effective.

There are a couple websites I have joined that pay you in credits to read ads and visit other member websites. When you accumulate enough points you can send your own ad and link to the member base.

One I have just sent out five ads for me with five links in one email to the entire membership of more than 4000 people.

Viral marketing works well, i.e. tell a friend, but only if you have something people like to pass around like free greetings or some other free tidbit.

Even if not though it is still worth it because you never know who might want to pass your site on to a friend if they feel that friend would be interested.

Then there are safelists. You sign up and agree to receive email from other members. In return you get to send your ads to the whole membership base via email.

Average member numbers for the ones I belong to range from a few hundred per list to nearly 10,000 people per list.

This cannot be considered spam because everyone has opted to receive ads from everyone else.

Every once in a while some member will accuse you of spam but just blow it off and email the list owner. They are usually sent a email telling them it is not spam or they have their account deleted.

Anyway, if you want a few specific examples you can email me. I will reply as soon as I can but it might take a couple days.

cheers,
Heidi

I used to get most of my hits from top sites and top lists. Now it seems to be spread quite evenly 3 ways with the topsites, search engines and link exchanges.

Best link page for me is at 51Links where i also mod the humor section.

Google (or, well, Google's algorithm) loves my site. Essentially, Google rates sites by the number of links pointing to them.

Since my site has been running for more than six years now, it has accumulated a few thousand links through longevity alone. (Think about it: one link a day would add up to over 2,000 in that time.) Most of these links are on obscure sites with little traffic: genealogists, libraries, political orgs, stuff like that, nothing to get excited about. I didn't push it very hard, and after a while I even gave up trying to reciprocate to everyone who linked to me.

Then suddenly Google came along, and decided that the number of incoming links was the most important measure of a site's value to search engine users. Google counted up the number of links to me, and ranked my site #1 on searches that yield hundreds of thousands of results. Like GRAVEYARD: #1 out of 590,000. Or POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY: #1 out of 773,000. Or DEAD POLITICIANS: #1 out of 370,000. And many others.

Not only that, but Google apparently now spiders my entire site -- more than 16,000 pages. I don't know what Google's normal limit is for pages-indexed-per-site, but certainly it is a lot less than that. So any obscure thing mentioned on any one of those pages will show up in search results.

It is only because of Google that I get over a million page views a month.

Yeah, 51links is good, and it does send me hits. That actually suprises me, because it almost looks like an FFA page, but I guess it would be something between an FFA and a directory. But I guess the main reason why I get hits from them is that I have my link at the complete top of the page with a "hot" behind my site name.
