Google all the way... others can't even compare. I have noticed a large amount of AOL users recently, though.

Start Page things are not a good idea. I found them to be not that effective.

There are a couple websites I have joined that pay you in credits to read ads and visit other member websites. When you accumulate enough points you can send your own ad and link to the member base.

One I have just sent out five ads for me with five links in one email to the entire membership of more than 4000 people.

Viral marketing works well, i.e. tell a friend, but only if you have something people like to pass around like free greetings or some other free tidbit.

Even if not though it is still worth it because you never know who might want to pass your site on to a friend if they feel that friend would be interested.

Then there are safelists. You sign up and agree to receive email from other members. In return you get to send your ads to the whole membership base via email.

Average member numbers for the ones I belong to range from a few hundred per list to nearly 10,000 people per list.

This cannot be considered spam because everyone has opted to receive ads from everyone else.

Every once in a while some member will accuse you of spam but just blow it off and email the list owner. They are usually sent a email telling them it is not spam or they have their account deleted.

Anyway, if you want a few specific examples you can email me. I will reply as soon as I can but it might take a couple days.

cheers,
Heidi

What are the websites?
Pls, tell me also !

Wow!

That is good!

I find it even hard to get that from the major search engines that just from exchanging links.

I took a nose dive in Google...once ranked 1st 2nd for some very competitive key phrases (between 2-3mil +) and now I'm sunk...the redesign might of killed it, Yahoo has come on strong, seems like a complete reversal.

Google: steady but dropped
Yahoo: Big increase

Most of my traffic has come from sources other than search engines. Although, this has been shifting with an upward trend. Although as search engine placements rise, so does traffic from that engine.

I get alot from Google although MSN is providing hits. I get hardly any from the lesser used search engines such as Ask Jeeves.

Update on my previous post: although my website does well on Google, I find that Yahoo and MSN are much faster with indexing my clients' sites, and the majority of traffic within the first year of the site's existence comes from these two engines.
