Google and Yahoo by far. Some of the top lists I'm part of also send a decent amount of traffic. I've also had a lot of luck with newsgroups.

1. Word of Mouth (I am still surprised how well that works)
2. Free Virtual Greeting Cards (I made some for Christmas and now I made a few for Happy New Year, will try to add more and more categories over time since it works pretty good and is a nice free service)

Some facts - Around 30 million people in the UK (x100+worldwide) use the internet and 80% of them use search engines to find information, products and services. It is, therefore, crucial for your website to be included in as many search engines as possible. The internet is still growing.
(URL SNIPPED)

Designing a website and submitting to free search engines is not enough. For maximum impact, ensure you give the right signals to robots, and submit your site to engines and directories aimed at your target traffic (URL SNIPPED)

Can I do it myself?
Yes and, when you achieve a good listing, the results are worth it. If you want to do it yourself, there are a number of options:

1. A priority search engine listing to reach 80% of internet users through search engines like AltaVista, MSN, LookSmart, Google, Excite (URL SNIPPED)

2. Submit your website to 1000's of Engines, directories and over 500,000 link pages (URL SNIPPED)

3. If you have a website but do not have the budget for priority and mass exposure submissions, you can use a FREE submission service (URL SNIPPED)

4. Over 50% of internet traffic is from non-English speaking countries. Develop a world wide internet presence by localising your website, (or just the key pages), products and services into other languages (URL SNIPPED)

Of course forums are good too!

<Admin Editted. Bob, I welcome you here to Webmaster-Talk. However this traffic extraction/self advertising in almost all your posts can not continue. Thank You.>

Hello,

We get most of the traffic from google and links from other websites. Setting up link exchange is a slow process but it really brings great results in the long run as search engine ranking is also affected by the link popularity.

Thankyou

For me, first is links from other sites, mostly from freeware listings and CIW Toplists. Second is Google. Third is MSN because I recently had some articles listed in Zeal. Fourth is probably people hotlinking to my images--Arrrgghhh!

but with cdcopyworld.com im getting 600+ visitors per day. dont know from where! i think it might be just people typing it in there browser to see if any thing is there. cause cd copying is a big thing these days

cheers
I think people confuse the site gamecopyworld (which offers no cd cracks) with your web site's URL.

I haven't done any paid advertising yet for my web design services site. I submitted to search engines and got listed in some free directories that list web designers/ web design firms. I get a few hits from these places.

www.marketingtool.com is one

www.firmlist.com is another

www.1234-web-designers.com I think is another.

I have traffic coming from many different areas of the web! But my best performing traffic comes from Google and PPC Search Engines. This is because the traffic is very targeted!

I could be like a lot of other people who first puts a site up on the Web, and join lots of traffic exchanges, auto surf for hits programs, etc. But whats the point as you will only recieve untargeted traffic and it will only waste alot of your bandwidth.

I find that I have exchanged links with alot of other sites, but I don't think I get many hits from them. Maybe it's because my sites title is SimplySearch4it! which gives me a listing in most of sites that I have exchanged links with, a page 3 or 4 listing.

Well! as longs as it improves my PR, thats one of the main things!!!

I get about 300-100 hits a day, 40-100 being unique. Err... something like that...

Quote:
Total Hits 10009
Total Files 6356
Total Pages 1267
Total Visits 519
Total KBytes 33257

Total Unique Sites 580
Total Unique URLs 412
Total Unique Referrers 147
Total Unique User Agents 164
Most seem to come from links, and 1606 have been a direct request, presumably from me
Strangely, however, only one person has posted besides people I asked to, despite all of these apparent hits.
