Your best bet for the major search engines is to manually submit them (or in Googles case, let them find you from a link on another site). Although there are very few "free" search engine now days that are even worthwhile submitting to.

You might find this site useful.

Also Addme is pretty popular if you don't know how or don't want to manually submit.
