I was wondering how to submit to baidu.com or find a better way to electronically translate a foreign language page? I get mostly ????? instead of words on their pages.

I would suggest using a search engine and finding a good translator that never hurts.

Baidu is very popular in Mainland China, it has 62.1% of the market.

It must be remembered that it is solely a Chinese language service. It can be used to sell things, but you should not expect much - if anything - from an English language page.

If anyone wants to PM me about advertising on Baidu or writing Chinese web pages please feel free. Or just for questions on the Chinese search scene in general.

I think your question shouldn't be how to submit to Baidu - that's easy as you've seen - it's how to get quality traffic from Baidu that's the real question.

Please let me know if you find out!!!

I've just recently started to get a small amount of traffic from Baidu and it's pretty good. Quite a small Bounce Rate. So far so good.

Submitting your site to search engine is not necessary anymore. Search engines will find your site all by themselves without any site submission help from you; they find pages in your site as long as there are links to them.

Links to your site will enable search engine spiders to index your site. Inbound links are part of the whole process that search engines use to rank your site.

Any savvy marketer, blogger or SEO provider needs to understand the mechanics of regional search. For starters:
  • Use properly translated keywords in your tags and text. Baidu and Google.cn are more likely to pick you up.
  • Submit your URL to Baidu at: http://www.baidu.com/search/url_submit.html
  • Be wary of foreign based SEO players outside of China that do not have an on-the-ground presence in country, or purport to know the market while telling you things like, “Simplified Chinese will be sufficient to serve all markets.” A good SEO will optimize for the various ethnic groups and service or product targets you choose. China has 56 ethnic groups and a minimum of 6 distinct markets that can require special understanding and consideration.
  • Get an authorized Baidu agent to place any ads for you. Do not buy from any company that claims Baidu has a set-up service fee. Ask for a copy of their contract with Baidu and access to your own control panel, even though it will be in Chinese.
