Why might one use a pay-per-click search engine? The money doesn't seem like it would add up that quickly, so why bother?

SmokingTequila,
The company I work for spends thousands of dollars a month in PPC engines. The two that are the most popular and successful our Google Adwords and Overture.
Obviously you don't want to use PPC unless you are SELLING something. It is all about conversion. We can pay over $1 a click for some of our terms and still comeout ahead.
We bid on hundreds of different keywords as well.
Anyway, PPC is not a good deal for all sites, but for many it is.
A little tip not related to the info above...
Overture does not allow affiliate links to be used in listings. Google Adwords DOES.
I set up one group of keywords for one merchants affiliate program. I was able to bid on several terms at only .05 per click (and still average about the 3rd spot).
TO make a long story short for every $3 I spend, I end up making about $7. My point is that I am making money using PPC without even having a website for some keywords...

Whether it is their policy or not, Overture is full of affiliate links....
After seeing your post I went there and di some casino searching....
There are litterally thousands of affiliate links populating the top listsings within the casino and gambling related keywords.

It might be an affiliate site, but the "link" used on overture paid listings can not be an affiliate URL.
My point was that you don't even have to have your own web site to advertise in Adwords. You can just use an affiliate link if you wanted. But in Overture, You must be the owner of the site/URL used in most occasions...
Post a link to the results you are referring to...

I stand on what I said before...
Whether it is their policy or not, Overture is full of affiliate links....

Adsense (the Google adverts you can place on your own site) or Adwords (the ads you can buy on Google)? I personally haven't had any experience with Adwords, but Adsense has been excellent! I have been earning $100+ per month just from my spare advert space.

I have been using ppc search engines on my site for over 1 year. I have found many advantages of advertising and affiliating with ppcse's
When advertising with ppcse's, I find it's best to find the ones that has an alexa ranking of 0 - 150,000. Anything above that I would not bother with as they are either new search engines on the web or they are failing to make a reasonable amount of revenue.
As we all know! If you don't make revenue then you won't stay in business long.
Another words, I find that most sites with and alexa ranking of 150,000 + don't end up renewing their domain name for the 2nd year.
I also find that affiliating with ppcse's is a very good way of earning some extra revenue for your site.

Welcome to WT john546 !
Actually Many 'HIGH RANKED' sites according to Alexa aren't even listed in yahoo directory...
Quantity doesnt mean QUALITY
Serious PPCs buy listings in yahoo directory to send $$$ trafic to their category pages... So just locate your market directory in yahoo.. click some top links, you will sure find some that use PPCs...
Now just filter/select them by checking their link popularity at http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/
Alexa rankings may help to compare well known sites but thats about it... Any newbie can boost their rankings up the position they want with a SIMPLE MACRO running Daily on a DSL or any Static ip connections
And it's exactly whats happening since Alexa exists... Their Top 10,000 Sites list looks more like SPAM and hitbot listings farm than anything else... Makes me laugh to see debt sites and mortgage sites with domains containing at least 4 hyphens to appears higher than Old and well known Adult sites... It's getting ridiculous..

Don't interpret my post as a ' how to cheat alexa guide '
It isn't a secret for anyone that macros and/or hitbots can fake ANYTHING, no more than it's a secret that Netbus / BackOrifice etc.. can crash your computer in seconds!
and best of all : it's ILLEGAL
You should focus on CONVERSION instead of Alexa traffic rank... just forget about that SPY counter...
There's things that should be legal, for anything else there's ALEXA !
Just my 2 cents...

Thanks "askufo" for telling me how to improve my alexa ranking by cheating!
LOL!!
To be honest, I already new that you could improve your alexa ranking by cheating, and so does a lot of other people. No that I have tried it of cause.
When I list sites in my directories, I don't only go by the sites alexa ranking. I also check the quality of their site, the type of information their site has to offer, the amount of links (other people's sites) linking to their site, etc.
