there is so many of them(i don't think we can count them), although almost all people use google/yahoo/bing or the general search engine shown at wiki(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ngines#General)
some people use the others too though
but i wonder why you need to know how many there are

this is the question em also asking with my friends and seo workers that how many exact search engines are there i remember i started submitting a website in search engines they were more then 150 but i dont know the xact number of total search engines

I am sure there are countless search engines but I don't know if people use them frequently being that google and yahoo are still at the top and are effective in giving accurate results.

You will find many search engines out there. but what matters is out of all which are the ones who show more refined searches.At the moment Google is at the top followed by Yahoo and MSN.

Other search engines are powered by these major search engines and show there result only.

The major search engine are three(Google, Bing, Yahoo) and if you are looking for exact figure then I think it is next to impossible.

There are lots of search engines i do not have exact figure but thesearchenginelist.com is good source for some good search engine.
