I have learned the exact opposite. Google has done more for the "little marketer" than any other company in the world. Adwords has made it possible for even the smallest of companies to gain instant visibility on the web to sell their products or whatever their goal is. Perhaps you are not old enough to remember when the web was young and ONLY large corporations were visibible and could succeed there.
As far as them wanting to "control the internet" and "grab massive profits", they are a freakin' business... they are NOT a non-profit organization. They are no different than any other business in the world. They want to grow their business, grow their marketshare, grow their profits..
Google has done a LOT for the world and the internet. Without Google there would be no Google earth, there would likely be no decent image search capabilities on the web, there would be no Android phones to compete with Apple's iPhone... the list goes on ad infinitim. I cringe when I think about what the web (and society) would be like if Google never existed.
The fact of the matter is... Google has done more for the internet than any other single company in the world.
