It's not that it doesn't work properly, it just is not designed to display all links that Google finds or counts. It just displays a sample of backlinks. That number will vary depending on which data center you access and how many links Google feels like displaying. Sometimes you may have actually lost some links when that count goes down. Other times, your actual links may not have changed at all.
If you built temporary link or by blog commenting and forum commenting sometime moderator remove your link or directory owner remove your link in some situation it will happen.
One possible reason is that your site really lost its backlinks. The best thing to do here is to check your google webmaster tools if you have any. Then from that, you can tell what actions to take.
it is like that you checked at that time when your site having backlinks considered by google.but sometimes your website lost backlinks due to spamming or other reason then google can't find backlinks so thats why you are facing this Problem.
you just lost backlinks. so keep building backlinks from high PR good sites. you will see result again in few days.
For getting good backlinks you should submit site links to digg, stumbleupon, propeller etc bookmarking site.
one way directory submission, article in good sites and forum posting will also help to get better number of backlinks again.
Google updates the number of backlinks regularly. It's not stable. But don't get too concerned about it, just continue on building quality links to improve your ranking.

I checked your site backlinks in google just recently and it shows that you have 44 backlinks. Maybe the time that you check it before, google is in process of updating backlinks.
