Hello everyone,

I am looking to put 2 sites into yahoo's directory. Because they are business sites i will have to pay £200 each for yahoo to consider them. They make it very clear that the £200 is just for them to look at the site and they may refuse you for any reason whatsoever.

This seems to me to be a scam. I could pay £400 just to be told, no sorry, we dont feel like including you today!

Does anyone have any view or experience with this matter? I would really appreciate your advice before i take the plunge and pay the money.

Thanks,

G

In all honesty I have never used the directory, nor have I ever advised any client to get listed.

Why do you want to be listed?

Is it because you think you may receive more traffic from being listed?

Or is it because you want the link for ranking purposes?

If your answer is receiving traffic straight from Yahoo, don't hold your breath. I have heard from many webmasters that being listed has given them little to no traffic.

If it is for the link, have a look at some of the other directories out there, most of which are far cheaper than £200 a year. You could get listed in 6 other directories at a cost of £30 each. Thats 6 times more links and 6 times more chances of receiving direct traffic from the directories.

I have only submitted my site to free directories and it is now showing no 2 in Yahoo for my targetted phrase. I ensured that the phrase was in the link text and Yahoo seems to like this.

Having said that, only a handful of visitors seem to come through Yahoo - everyone seems to use google these days...

From some of my friends. They imply it's not really worth your time even though it may be a valauble choice if you have a pretty high budget.

It might seem a lot of money but I would say that it is important to be listed in Yahoo. Together with DMOZ they are the most important directories to have a link from. Not in terms of traffic received from it, but in terms of pagerank.

In the web design/web hosting sections where there are hundreds if not thousands of sites, expect something like 2 hits a month in your server log.

May i ask which free directories you used? Does the list on the "directory list" thread cover the ones you used?

Guerrilla

The reply from James Anderson is spot on. Frankly i think being listed in the directory is certainly not worth the money. I paid it for our UK Job site www.redgoldfish.co.uk and its done absolutely nothing towards driving traffic or enhancing our profile.

Yea. It is kinda scammy. Don't pay. Like others have said, your site will eventually get indexed by Yahoo, Google, and the like without you doing or paying anything. I recently put my site on the web, and never submitted to any search engines. Within a month I was listed in most of the common ones. Save your money.

There are probably other places to spend the investment to receive greater benefits. Being that yahoo has a search engine, I am sure having a directory listing would not hurt. If you have the revenue to support the listings then go for it. If you can use the money else where and receive higher ROI than do that. It is not a scam, it is just a service offered by Yahoo. It is not a requirement, and not directly tied with the search engine.

The money is well worth it I think and we recommend it for all our clients. The site has to be properly done of course and I would be happy to review it to give you a good chance of acceptance.

What you're paying for is a directory listing, a permanent, usually high ranking link not a fluctuating search result listing that yes does happen over time. The directory listing is with in a week or so. These are valuable links that can raise page rank of a new site quickly. This listing also usually gets into the country based directories as a bonus that equals to another directory link pointing at your site. Hope this helps and good luck.

The yahoo directory isn't really worth it. Yes, spiders go to it. But the cost of submitting, and the possibility of being rejected make it unattractive. I prefer to submit to free and inexpensive directories. Honestly, did you even know yahoo had a directory before you heard that you should be in it? I didn't. I think most people don't even know about it. You will get very little traffic from the directory. Any PR increase and spider activity could easily be made up by getting quality incoming links. These options are much less expensive, plus you don't run the risk of losing your money.

I do agree to a point, neorunner, that there are always different options to achive the same end. Yahoo link ranking is good to have, in my opinion. Also, if your site and Yahoo submission are done correctly you will get accepted. We've done about a dozen sites for clients and not one was turned down.

Just looked at the link listed above and it does seem feasable that you can get into Yahoo by using a blog and adding it to your Yahoo account and etc as described.

I am not listed in Yahoo yet so I may try the technique on the link above and see if it works. Hope to post back with a result in a few days.

Hmmm... So many different points of view.

I think i am going to hold off the yahoo directory for the time being and concentrate on free links. I think that after i have maxed out i will look at buying links.

Thanks for all your good advice.

I don't view it as a rip-off.

It's a service that keeps giving. With the internet getting more commercial all the time, having a strong link back from one of the most established portals can't hurt.
But that is my view.
Good luck to you whatever route you decide to take

I have my sites forum listed in yahoo in the first 2 pages for atleast 6 of my keywords. With 3 of my keywords having my sites forum on the first page of yahoo and the other 3 in the top of page 2. No need to pay for submission. I didn't.

You can get into their standard search for free but the only way you can get into their directory is if you are not a company. Companies have to pay to be approved
