I just finished my website and want to start promoting:
In order to submit my website to seach engines, I will submit to each major search engine individually like or I will use a website who will submit my URL automatically to thousands of search engines for example? What is best here? Does anyone know a good website who will submit my URL to many search engines for 'free'?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Michel

There is only a small amount of search engines worth submiting. Google holds by far the largest share of traffic.

1. Google 56.4%
2. Yahoo 21.1
3. MSN Search 9.2%
4. AOL Search 3.8%
5. Terra Lycos 2.0
6. Altavista 1.7%
7. Askjeeves 1.7%

Some companies will offer to submit your site to thousands of search engines but ask yourself if you have heard of any of them. If a search engine has less than a 1% share of traffic, is it worth paying to someone to add your site to whats probably a free search engine to submit your site to.

The best way to get onto search engines like Google is to simply have a link from a site within Google's index pointing to your site. When Googlebot finds the link it will follow it and index the page that it finds and then follow all links it can find on that page to index any new pages it comes across.

I personaly would submit myself and looking at the figures above it shouldn't take very long. I would also look for some directories that are specific to my market sector and submit to the major ones as well like DMOZ.

Some search engines do not like automatic submission of the site, so if possible, do not use automatic submission process.

Submit your site in DMOZ (Open Directory) also. Most of known search engines use DMOZ (open directory). The submission is free in this directory.

Just add your site in this open directory. If your site will be added in DMOZ then most of the search engines will show your site in thier search result.

I wouldn't bother submitting to search engines at all...just work on getting links.

Submit your site to established directories and all the major search engines will have you listed reasonably fast.
