And so it has been launched in alpha. Wikia search, the open source search engine is billed to be the latest contender to Google.
Having tested it out it isn't half bad, although it seems it has only indexed front pages of sites so far, the nature of the site means most of it is still in testing but it is definitely worth a look. Jasmie

Doesn't look too bad. I did react on the order of some of the sites in my "regular" test-serches, though, not quite what I'm used to.. :-p

A little underwhelming ... but if it's a pre-launch peak, that's fair.

it is a good sign to see a new player in the search industry, yahoo, msn, ask etc. all are still far behind the leader after a long battle for market share , we really need some healthy competition in this sector.

I use wikipedia for a lot of plant related information. I just did a search for something and most of what came up was retail outlets that were carrying what I was searching for. I hope it gets fine tuned and it becomes a place where you can find websites with information and not just the places selling products.

The results are very limited.
I'm building the index of ecrambler [dot] com which indexes sites on ecuffo.com first and then expands from there. As soon as I reach a threshhold of around 5,000,000 links in the database, I will market it. You can submit your site to the search engine now if you would like. Submitting to both ecrambler and ecuffo will be the ideal way to get indexed.

I think Search Wikia has been pretty well panned by the tech press and blogs. This article on Search Engine Land is typical.
A dismal roll-out is a serious problem for Wikia. Of course they intended to "suck less" over time. And the web 2.0 content provided by users will bring improvement up to a point. Then the same factors that erode article quality on Wikipedia, vandals, point of view pushers, spammers and social networking influence will kick in and overwhelm the improvement. Somehow bringing the Beta up to a reasonable standard might have bought Search Wikia some time. The flop on release will hasten the inherent problems. This is a serious blow of Search Wikia and Wikia as a business. Last edited by GBG : 01-23-2008 at 07:53 AM. Reason: grammar |

ecuffo, you might want to check the text on your submission page (I just used it because I was curious):

Check out what results are returned with the search terms "webmaster talk." http://re.search.wikia.com/search#webmater%20talk Just in case it changes the current top spot on the list is here. You can't make up stuff that funny.
Search Wikia's algorithm must be to lock a bunch of monkeys in a room with keyboards. |

They would be if you spelled "webmaster" right.

Yeah, those are better (although not much). At least kline11 will be happy with them. SearchBliss is on Page 1 from what I've seen (and it's probably the only server they have, so I suspect there's no rotation and stuff.)
