Recently I noticed that some of my site's posts have different titles in Googles Search results. (I use Wordpress, BTW)

For example, some of my newer posts have just the post title in them (Which I like better), but some of my other posts have the title:
Toptenlisted.com >> Blog Archive >> Post Title

Does anyone know why this is added to the title in the search results? I feel my results would look cleaner (and better for rankings) if I could remove the first two parts to the title.

It must be somewhere in the script for your site.

I didn't think it would be the script because some of the results have it and some don't.

I had previously assumed it had something to do with how Google reads the certain posts (unless my site's script is where search engines pick up on the title?).

Some of the titles are different in the "Google Index".

For example, if you type in site:www.toptenlisted.com at google, a few of the posts will have the regular title but there are others (mostly older ones, although not very old), that have the "Toptenlisted.com >> Blog archive >>" in the title within Google.

This is why I thought the difference was caused by google, because my site's own personal titles are just fine.

Also BTW, those are supplemental, but I do not think that is an issue with the titles, I'm not sure.

Look at the titles in the two links I posted

the titles are different on your SITE

They are EXACTLY the same as they are in the Google SERP

Please point me to one that has been crawled recently where they are different.

At some point between the 31st of May 2007 and 25th of June 2007 something on your site was changed/updated to create the new style titles.

I did notice that those titles are different, I was talking about my actual posts though (I don't know why the title is different).

An example to what I was referring to is here:

In the SERP of my site search, (here) the last result on this second page should be:
Toptenlisted.com » Blog Archive » Top 10 Ideal Future Inventions ...

However, when you follow that link, the toptenlisted.com > blog archive part is no longer there.

Also, I don't know how often each individual page is crawled, so it may be outdated, but they have been that way for awhile.

Were you able to find anything?

Was the example I showed you a satisfactory example of my problem?

There is no "problem"

Review your site logs, when all the pages have been reindexed the issue will simply go away.

Sometimes google uses the dmoz description if it feels it is more relevant to the search phrase, but I've never seen a different title

Notice in you example that all the pages with the Toptenlisted .com » Webmaster Resources type titles are in the Supplemental...The pages indexed in the regular index are full correct titles.

You have 75 indexed pages and all but 6 are in the supplemental, which means they will not be produced in search queries. I would suggest you tackle you probable duplicate content issue.

It can be because of too many tags, reproduction of previously published content, canonical issues, same Meta information on all post pages, and many other less popular issues.

I think the reason for the title change is the supplemental view.

Peace
Melanie
