This is pretty big, in my opinion...and I suspect one of the reasons they're coming out with Universal Search as well:

It's my first exclusive story! I'm so proud of me!

Google is finally listening to the webmaster community and giving us what, well, it's not what we all wanted, but apparently it's what they've been getting the most complaints over. I'm sure you've already heard about this, but for anyone living under a rock, Google is replacing the old "top 10" SERPs with a new AJAX application that returns everything they know about a given search term. There's fancy new compression, and async (ie multi-threaded) calls to make it all snappy.
They say this will give them better relations with the people who make everything on the internet. I don't know if it's really a good thing for people who just want to find info, but that's why I'm asking what you guys think.

Wow...this is rare.
A major Google announcement and no one on here is talking about it, with the obvious search implications? What, did everyone lose their interest in SEO or something?

Hummm, thats my first reaction, ive read it and got wondering, so if I dont get that YFD on my pc, then it wont work for me? in all honest i know many people who r not fond of installing such things on pc, and the claimt that this soft will not track any search we made is bit dubious, well i am yet to see them to convince me it is what they say it is.
as for the thing itself - I take its excellent, though I might be misunderstanding it a bit - but isnt it making it easier now, which means less work is needed to be done as well iro SEO companies - any SEO would be able to claim they can get u first page of the search result. Which is good, but on other hand, what will determine now whether the company is actually doing any good work or its just google...u know.
or am i on wrong trail here?

No, I think you've got the right general idea. Google is making life easier for SEOs. They're finally tapping into the group that made them famous!

does this mean there going to have ALL the sponsored links at the top so users cant see natural listing I guess that’s the plan by Google so they can make more money
also how will it work users will search for a keyword and 1000 websites come up will they keep scrolling down until the end surly its better having 10 per page
maybe I am wrong and it will work out great for every one but at this time it seem Google wants to push more traffic though there sponsored links

You know, I think ten results per page instead of seven and a half million works better for my attention span.
Newbies ( present company excluded, John ) keep asking why their new site isn't listed in Google. It sounds like they got tired of deleting emails about that? Also, since Google announced they're looking into paid links, they've had an insurgency on their hands from as lot of people who run sites. People have always been calling Google evil, but a lot more of them lately, and there's a constant theme about them not listening to webmasters. So maybe they're trying to give that community a bone and quiet them down?
Honestly, I don't think it's going to help Joe Sixpack who just uses Google for search. Even if they can send down billions of results in four seconds with their new compression ( and you're right to ask if we need to install something, or maybe use the Google toolbar? ), doesn't your browser still have to parse all the html that gets sent down? They really haven't said much on how it'll all work, but then gmail raised some eyebrows with it's "unlimited" storage, and actually works much faster than Outlook on the desktop. So who knows, maybe they do have something revolutionary up their sleeves?

Interesting speculation, Forrest. I find myself agreeing with a large portion of it. I don't think this was done to placate the SEO community so much as to keep them happy, though. It's not really a bone as such, but a new search engine reality.

Doesn't placating someone mean keeping them happy?
Anyway, this comes out in beta form in what, a week or two? Something like that? Google is addicted to betas.
I think it's actually a good idea if they can pull it off. And yeah, it really only helps SEOs, but now you can use CTRL+F to see whether you're indexed or not. And who hasn't wondered about if they're #93 or #930? Probably saves bandwidth doing everything in one big packet instead of building a million short-lived connections to the server. In programming, they call it chatty vs chunky protocols. But they're using AJAX, right? So there's probably a point of diminishing returns.
Of course I'm assuming they just give you all the results in one big list, but the same order. Which means it probably won't actually change things that much, in terms of SEO strategy, just save all of us some clicks.
And Google really always has been about "clean" and simple interfaces.
