A really simple way to think about keyword density is to just write your content for your visitors. If the copy reads well for a human being you've used the right amount of keywords.
The point being not to worry so much about keyword density. Yes it's a ranking factor and no it's probably not going to make a big difference one way or the other.
When I write my own pages I use my keywords in the copy when it makes sense to mention them. I really don't think much about them at all. But if I happen to be writing a page about 'honda automobiles' it's only natural I would end up using the words honda and automobile a few times. I'll still use car if automobile sounds awkward because I've used it a couple of times in a paragraph already and I'll also mention accord or civic instead of always saying honda.
If it doesn't read well for human beings it doesn't matter how much traffic you get from a search engine or any other source.
As for how much is too much. I don't know if there's an exact answer, but if you keep it under 10% you're probably safe, though 10% might already be pushing the envelope a bit. The number though is really just a guess on my part.
