Ranked #21 While Defying All

This one site, abc-russian-women.com, ranks number 21 under 'mail order brides, the keywords where my site ranks #613

The page has a PR4,
it has only 11 backward links,
of those links, 9 are PR4, and 2 are PR5,
none of those links rank in the top 100,
it has none of the keywords in it's Title,
it has no H1 tag,
it is listed in dmoz.

How does a page like that get ranked #21?

This adds to my theory that there is something else going on besides all the usual tips that we discuss.

Please explain.

The link command on Google is very outdated and doesn't take into account all the links they've added, although the SERPS do.

Thanks for that information, however, if the problem is that Google is outdated, then Google is outdated for all of the top 100 sites in that keyword, so it's relative, right?

Yes, it is relative. But definitely keep working on getting back links. Make sure the anchor text is "mail order brides" and you will be able to go much higher in the rankings.

A link from DMOZ is counted greatly because Google likes web sites that are indexed in DMOZ. Google themselves uses DMOZ listings in their directory, which will count as another good link. Google sees DMOZ to be very important.

Yes, I've heard that and heard that. It seems a very popular cliche.

However, the fact is this. In my industry 82 of the top 100 sites are not listed in dmoz.

Makes me think that a link from dmoz is just another link.

DMOZ does make a difference, some user of one of my gaming sites listed it in DMOZ for us and it immediately went up to a PR4 without even having Keywords or descriptions on it. The downside of that is that it can take forever to get listed. WWM has been waiting on its listing since early this year with no results.

Sure it makes a difference. Every link counts and when a site is listed in dmoz, it also is listed in hundreds of directories that use the dmoz feed; possibly hundreds of links.

Get more links with your keywords in them

Depending on the competitiveness of the keywords it can take hundreds or thousands of them.
