Has anyone tried the new Google Trends thing?

You can put in a couple of words or phrases and it compares the traffic and news related to it

Check out Google Labs.

What could you use it for?

Interestingly, you can discover that viagra is searched for most by people who live in Manchester, uk.

I'm sure that's wrong...

Surely you could use it to spot future demands? Businesses will probably use it to see what products to bring out...

I notice more people search for good than for evil - side note, maybe, but I thought it was worth noting...

The Evil Ones don't need search engines. They use their dark forces to locate websites.

Muhaha.

I think trends needs more data than jsut a little graph - if it could do a regression analysis or ANOVA for significant differences in the trend searches then you could use the site for some decent market research.

Alternatively - make the data available for download so that you can run your own significance analysis & detect weaker trends.

Otehrwise I think it's a very cool new tool from google - but needs work.

I've played around with Trends a little, but I can see the use in comparing the graphs of several searches to discover if they are somehow related in the thought process of searchers. There's an obvious example in the the suggested searches 'huricaine katrina, gas prices' I think we could all guess the graphs would be related and they show a spike at the same time. It's pretty much what anyone might expect.

I do think by trying different searches other closely related search trends can be found as well as some trends we may have thought would be related showing that they aren't.

I think there may be some interesting marketing information that can be learned.

That search actually makes a lot of sense. Would you really expect more people to actually search for Google while at Google? I'll bet that more people search for Google on Yahoo's search engine that for Yahoo.
