I have a myspace horror movie page, and I wanted to know if adding meta tags to the html part of my profile would help with my google positioning? I have a myspace page for "Scream 4", and it's on page 3 of google's search results for "Scream 4". But if I add meta tags with "Scream 4", "Scream 4 official site", etc. to my profile, will that help it get to page 1 or 2?

Google ignores the meta keywords tag so adding them isn't going to help.

I have some sites that don't use Keyword meta tags and they rank better than some that do in the same category... on Google.

Keywords in Description and especially the Title tag will have more impact.

Wondering if you guys could clarify something for me. Nic-ky said he wanted to add Meta Tags to his page, now i saw some responses that only said the "Keywords" tag and it wont help google rankings.

OK. So if he was refering to meta tags wouldnt that also include the "title" and "description" tag?

I could see Nic-ky getting alittle confused here as am i. I for one always add pretty much full meta tags to my pages for the simple fact it doesnt hurt so i do it.

Now are you guys saying not including a "title" and "description" tag will not impact the results at all or specifically just the "keywords" tag will not impact the standings.

Because i could see the keywords tag not playing a factor and according to google it doesnt, but id have to say i agree in the fact that the page might get higher rankings if a title and description tag were used since they are also part of the meta tags.

And i could be wrong but when he said Meta tags i presumed he meant including title, description, and keywords......not just keywords.

The title is NOT a meta tag. So quite correctly we don't include in another discussion on meta tags

meta description is often used as the text snippet in the SERPs but not for ranking purposes.

meta keyword entries are of no use at all for rankings in any major SE (Yahoo use the KW meta as a very minor part. obscure words, mis-spelling, synonyms etc)

Yep, just like Chris said. The title tag isn't a meta tag at all which is why I didn't mention it. Most people when they mention meta tags are usually talking meta keyowords specifically and based on the original post with a list of comma separated phrases I thought it safe to assume the question was specifically about meta keywords and not the description.

I think the meta description is important though not for ranking. It's important for conversions and getting people to click on your link when it's used as the description in the SERPs
