dmoz may carry weight with google rankings but as a directory aimed at being clear and beneficial to people surfing the web, not so much.
Most of the sites in dmoz are very old, they look like crap and have little benefit to people. Maybe commercial categories have a bit better quality sites, but in general im not very impressed.
I think if they're going to run the directory cleanly and efficiently something big needs to be done. Either accpet more editors or as mentioned above charge a listing fee and hire people to edit categories properly.
