Ever since my site turned one year old (October 2005), my Google rankings has consistently appeared in the top five. Last week, however, my rankings for several different search terms disappeared.

Nothing has changed on my site, such as the number of links, Page Rank, etc.

Is this something that happens occassionally? Could it be that I am accessing an outdated database (index)?

Google constantly changes even if your site hasn't. Updating your site frequently does help. Also, you competitors may have been "tweeking" their sites to appear above yours. I would make some changes. It doesn't need to be drastic. Increase your keyword percentages slightly before each index until your rankings increase again.

Just to clarify, my site didn't just drop from 1 to 15, it's nowhere to be found in the rankings.

I've seen my site drop a few positions and then rise again after I tweaked a page for a certain keyword or phrase, but I've never seen it disappear.

All of the pages on my site are indexed and were indexed again around the time this happened (12-23 to 12-25).

same thing happened to me right around xmas eve and xmas day. went from top 30, to 150 on our broadest term. this has happened to us before.

give it a full week before you start panicking.

the last two times this happened to our site (both within the last 6 months), we moved UP a couple spots after google figured it all out (which as i said above took about a week).

I agree with dems. This isn't unusual and It should settle back soon.

Same thing here as well to one of my client sites. Hope it will settle down soon.

Sorry to hear that your rnaking slipped.

Like everyone else here mentioned, give it a week or two to get sorted. In the meantime, work on adding fresh content and links.

UPDATE - our broad ranked keyword that we lost around Xmas showed back up today with a gain of 5 positions. FYI
