When a page links to another, the PageRank of the first page is partly redistributed to the second. This part is equal to the original PageRank divided by the number of links of the original page. That is very logical and simple if you thinck about it.
But this is just talking about the PageRank. Relevance is another thing very important for the ranking. If the first page is about a subject similare to the second page, the BOTH will gain "relevance" for this subject. As far as I know, nobody is able to say if:
- a directory is different from a "normal" page regarding relevance gain
- number of links of the original page is important regarding the relevance gain
