Post urban legends you've heard about google here.

One thing I'm tired of seeing is people who think they have to
'play the game' or trick google into getting them high positions.
(I'm the webmaster for greenbuilt-research.com - I worked
for a small SEO company for awhile as well)
The truth is, google standards are good standards by any means.
Clean code, clear writing, good interlinking and navigation,
and lots and lots of content are all things that google looks at when
determining page rank (not to be confused with the much hyped green bar).
Many people think that they have to target certain 'keywords' to get
where they want, but never stop to think if people will actually be typing
these key phrases into the google search. For instance, I worked with
a company that wanted high rankings for 'buy motorcycle' and 'buy atv'.
Unless you're a google guru used to using such serch terms, the average
purchaser of items like that wouldn't type 'buy motorcycle' or 'buy atv'.
One thing that no one seems to give google credit for is their massively
intelligent language engine. When you're writing text for your website,
don't think 'am I putting enough keywords in?' and start thinking 'hey,
google understands what I'm saying'. Google is smart, much smarter than
most people realize, and if you clearly state the purpose of your website
within the first few paragraphs, you've done all you need to do for google
to understand it.

Another thing to be wary of is that little green PR bar in the google
search bar. Everyone seems to think that it represents actual Page Rank,
but in truth it is based on an entirely separate algorithm that is
merely guessing actuall PR. Plus, every website on the internet has
its own unique ranking, so if the PR bar showed all the steps from 1-6,000,000,000
in 1/8 inch measurements, it would surely circle the globe.

My point here is this: make a damned good website with damned good
content, and THEN worry about linking. With excellent content, excellent
writing, and excellent navigation, you really can't go wrong.

I think it's safe to say that most people in the SEO industry are idiot ametures(sp?). Especially owners of many website who have a very little success and then won't listen to what anyone else has to say.
