Such behaviour indicates we are at the verge of some major updates.

Google is using 3 different algorithms for returning search results now. This causes a randomisation of the SERPs.

~ I have seen some random behavior but it appears to be data centers out of step... any evidence to back up the 3 algo comment?

Yup, I do have evidence. I read about this on webmasterworld.com and there was this web page with all the IPs of the datacenters that Google uses. Results received from these datacenters were classified in three distinctive groups in terms of BL counts, # of indexed pages and SERPs for each web page/site.

Let me see if I can find that thread...

This is the thread:
http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum30/27801-1-10.htm

It's a very long one, and I failed to find the URL of the page I mentioned. Maybe you can...

G has ~17 DCs, each of which has its own updating sequence and perhaps a few of them were grouped for updating with different testing algos. From what I observed, each day, your browser will be switching to obtain SEAPs from different DCs a number of times depending on its own reasons. I guess this may explain why people can find varying indexed page no., apparently different algos within a day.

I guess its not the different algo but the lack of data consistency on the data centers is making the same algo to show different results probably.

google algo changes so often. when i did a search for my site, my #$%^&## tellafriend script gets indexed instead of my index page.
before, google didn't mind that i had little text on the hompage. guess now they do.

Well, there is no reason for a great company as Google to allow such an inconsistency if they did not want it to exist. It is a huge possibility that they are using three different algos. Even if there aren't 3 different algos, but an inconsistency in the same algo, this still produces a randomisation of the search results.

Google is one of the most unpredictable search engines out there. For example, on the first page of a search for the keyword Horror Movies, they have a blog listed on page 1. A blog! I mean the internet is for WEBSITES. People don't care about blogs. They need to make a seperate search engine category for blogs. That way if someones looking for a Horror Movie BLOG, they have to type in that keyword. Blogs shouldn't be gumming up the results while real websites are trying to get to page 1.
