Ever wondered what might be next for Google?

First they offered up the best search engine, then image searching, next they added usenet groups archive and posting, and more recently a search engine of all news articles from major sources...

Well.. here are some things to play with, that might (or might not) make it to the Google.com front page:

Enjoy...

I think you might be confusing the newly added "news" entry at the top of the results with the first results.

Checking all 7 data-centers: Google-Dance all 7 data-centers for business web design - certainly looks like the same result (ours) in the top position across all 7.

Every once in a while, there is a discrepancy between the data-centers, but at the moment (7:47AM MST, 17th Jan, 2003) it would appear that all results show our site in the #1 position.

Read carefully....

It was differant when I checked (You were second).

I'm assuming you know that putting excessive comment tags filled with nothing more than your keywords is spamming(obviously or you wouldn't have done it) and making 0 pixel images just so you can add alt tags is spam.

I would'nt be supprised if some visitors went here and reported you.

I just noticed that the Virginia server toggled us and Hoover Web Design, we did indeed move into 2nd place on one engine for a second, but a refresh a few seconds later changed the positions back - most odd, but we've seen it before, both in our results, and those of our customers.

As for your little dig about comment "spamming", there are two lines of comments. You can call anything you want SPAM (and probably would if you aren't achieving results as good on your own merits) - we have good position based primarily on the popularity of our site, and the fact that our name contains the word "web" helps enormously for any search involving the word web - perhaps that little gem escaped your notice.

I'm not going to lower myself to taking this discussion into the depths of my code is better than yours, or whether proper or improper use of ALT tags is in play on our site, whether your site has too few keywords or is simply an eye candy site rapidly going nowhere, but suffice it to say, our site does well in the engines - you go get your own results.

I will help you a tad, by suggesting that you look to external factors as much as you do internal ones in your search for a clue on anything search engine position related - you should examine the age of our site against yours - we have considerably more links to our site than you:

links to www.netboom.co.uk = 0

links to www.webyourbusiness.com = 408

This number of links results in a google page rank of 6 for even the most mediocre of sites linking to us. You, on the other hand, derive NO pagerank, as you have NO-ONE linking to you.

It seems a little like sour grapes to me, but I'm sure you have your own reasons for appearing like you're sniping at my signature and our web site .... the vast majority of our search popularity comes from link popularity, not the site itself. You should concentrate on building your own site, rather than trying to knock down those who appear to be much more successful at search engine positioning than you are. Your energies would be better employed if you turned them to the positive, I'm sure you're a real charm to be around - you appear to ooze negativity!

regards

Well, I'm new to optimization but I thought keyword spamming in alt tags resulted in you getting thrown off google. I asked this question on another forum you can see the thread below.

<SNIP>

I mean if you can get away with it then great, but i'd rather not risk it.

I think it admirable that you say you're trying to learn. The fact remains, the so called "expert" who supposedly "reported" our site to the Google team is in breach of the general guidelines himself....

From: http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html:

Quote:
Keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number (fewer than 100).
His front page has a few more than that guideline... we have a few spacer images with keyword alt tags (3 or 4 keywords per spacer image) - he chooses to use the IMG TITLE attribute to attempt some level of keyword density (which isn't used by the majority of the engines actively crawling sites).

I think I'll take my cue from those that get great results - ie, us... he can't even rank first place for a search on his own two biggest keywords, with or without quotes:

Google Search for: online literature : Result 5th place

Google Search for: "online literature" : Result 4th place]

us:

Google Search for: web your business : Results: 1st, 2nd and 3rd

For the record, we offer search engine marketing in return for payment (ie, part of our business is SEO/SES work - local designers and ISPs send us their search engine work as well - we have an impeccable reputation when it comes to this kind of work, we will NOT jeopardise it) - we offer a money back guarantee based on position with some of our programs, and we have yet to need to refund a single customer their money.

Your expert may well do well in his field, it hardly matters - we have plenty of work, and we don't spend anything on advertizing - not even adwords or overture.

Good luck learning to optimize your site - you could have had almost no end of free advice by being NICE in the first instance - instead you chose to be snippety and have some "expert" report us for search engine spamming. We have NEVER been in trouble ANY engine, as we ALWAYS stay within their guidelines.

adios...

GHL

There is a lot of advice about, I'm just trying to sift through the rubbish as you proably did.

If your site stays on google over the next few months then I'll more than likely use similar tactics.

Darren.
