The title on my homepage is "Maths Is Fun - Maths Resources", and the site ranks No 3 on G for "Maths" (that is the British English version of Math !)

I was thinking about changing the title to "Maths Is Fun - Math Resources" to try to rank better for "Math"

But I don't want to lose my position for MathS !

Does anyone think that having Maths in the title twice is helping?

Do you have a site link to look at? Having the word twice shouldn't hurt but at a glance I would say your ok with the change. Your ranking is not based solely on your title so changing one letter shouldn't hurt a 3 ranking.

Thank you, auxic.

The site is www.mathsisfun.com (I thought I had put it in my signature)

As far as I can tell, Google see "Math" and "Maths" as two totally separate words. May as well be apples and oranges. Never get a visit where people type in "math".

I wanted to be sure, thank you. The site looks great with lots of fun learning stuff on it. I would look at your title tag in general, it could be better, more descriptive.
Check out our http://www.auxic.com/fa_metatags.htm page for more on Meta tags and see if it helps.
You are right about Google looking at the two words differently so I would suggest having both in your title.

Google does not see Math and Maths as different keywords but it also see some of its synonyms like mathematics to search for any of the keywords.

Now why you rank no 3 in Maths and nowhere for Math is you have lots of backlinks with Maths as keyword but nothing with Math keywords. Keep the Title as it is and try getting some Backlinks with Anchor text as Math and you should gain position in SERPs for that keyword too.

Thank you both for the advice. I REALLY appreciate the help, so kindly and freely given.

I will have to look closely at the meta tags, and get more links (easier said than done!)

BTW, shabbirbhimani, how did you find out the backlink keywords? Is there some cool tool that shows who links and what link text they use?

Not a problem, glad to help Mathisfun.

Shab great point about the backlink text, very important, but I would wonder about the two words; Math and Maths. Google does see them differently. If you search for both you get different results, different number of results, etc. so it looks like Google does look at them differently. If you want to rank high in both you should use both in your titles and if posssible back link text. That's my opinion. Please advise if I'm off base.

Also getting backlinks that you want is easy. For example on your http://www.mathsisfun.com/links/links.htm page put what you want people to use for a link back to your site. Give them the code like we do at http://www.auxic.com/linktous.htm.

Hope this helps!

You are not really offbase but somewhat. What google does is it shows different results for Maths, Math, Mathematics for sure but when going for searching for the keywords it fetches the same results for Math, Maths, Mathematics and shows depending on the words of the searcher. This has been deduced by some experience and I am not the actual google guy to predict the algo.

This article will be of hel to you.

What people mean when they talk about backlink text is what generally you enter as your site title when adding your site to a directory. So, for the next diectories you decide to add your site to, use the title 'Math is Fun' or even something more specific like 'KS2 Math games' if you're targetting Key Stage2.

Also, your meta-tag description ought to contain Math as well as maths.

BTW, did you mean to have the 'revisit after 15 days meta tag'? That's telling spiders to only come back every 15 days. I would just remove it unless there is some reason why you don't want your site regularly crawled.

Hope this helps (nice site - I'm a primary teacher specialising in maths!)

Will not help much but will not harm you if you put in there.
