It could be due to an update.

Has Harro's english went bad? Seriously tho search engine results seem to change on a daily basis. Since I have a weblog and update on a fairly regular basis I see it happen all the time. I'll post something one day, and shoot to the top of the rankings, and after a few days the posts will fall in the rankings, because most likely others have posted similar things. No guarantees on how long an such search will stay on the top. I used to rank number 2 for the search "Ethan" (right below ethan allen). But eventually I dropped off that and now I'm moving back up.
And more importantly what Dave (cptnwinky) said its probably just because of an update.

I have heard some interesting stuff about a new changing algo that changes from day to day, I dont no how true it is but could explain. Another thing I have heard is the sanbox actually boosting rankings for the first couple of days before turning into the sandbox we all know and hate. Again no proof but interesting stuff.

Exactly my reaction:
"Has Google went mad?" "Be you own boss"
What the heck happened to spelling and grammar?
It's not a trivial matter: I've seen some visually well-designed websites (especially those offering SEO and web design) that end up looking very unprofessional as a result of poor spelling and grammar. Maybe it's a spell-check issue or maybe the designer really doesn't know the difference between "loosing" and "losing", or "your" and "you're", or "there" and their", etc., etc.
If you know or have an idea that you suck at writing correct English, get someone to proofread it for you. Otherwise, all that hard work you've just done on design and promotion may leave you wondering where all the clients went.

ive got to agree with this. i certainly wasn't looking to point out bad grammar/spelling. I was just kind of amused by it. When it comes to instant messages, posting on forums, or just taking notes, i'm usually not to concerned with my spelling. I hardly ever proof read a forum response, but when it comes to my own site i try to proof read things several times over before publishing.
i used to use google sometimes to spell check a word because it would say "did you mean:" and supply the correct spelling of the word. now it seems like i can't even do that because there are so many sites with mispelled words google is even confused. just for fun I typed "fantasty" into google instead of the correct spelling of "fantasy" and was amazed to see it bring back over 26,000 results. anyway I don't know where i'm going with this, but it's truely fascinating, hardly talked about in the google forum. so i figure i'd throw in my two cents.

Maybe you're in the sandbox right now (if it's a new site that's 2 months old).
Google puts that site in a sandbox and let's the links and rankings active
after 2-4 months I hear.

I remember once when we were looking for Bran to grow mushrooms on.
Type Bran into eBay and see what you get...

I get the feeling this may be happening to me too, but my site was up in June. Sometimes I'll get 15 guests to my forum or 8, and then after that back to the usual 2 or 3 a day. The best way to go is buying traffic. The search engines will never help. I post on Bloodydisgusting, Horror.com, the horror channel, and prettyscary.com, 4 premier horror movie websites, my site has a bunch of relative keywords, and the url to my site is in my sig at all of these forums I post at, and yet I'm not even on the first 5 pages. I don't know when googles next update is, as when they are gonna start moving sites up a few pages, down a few pages, etc, but I doubt I'll be in the top 5. I hope I will, but I doubt it.

Another thing to keep in mind is how many competitors you have for a keyword. Some sites that are targetting your same keywords may have been up for years and networked a vast amount of links and content.
Thinking that Google sucks simply because you don't see the results from it you think you deserve is, IMHO, ludicris.

The same thing happened to a few of my sites too. I thought that I was penalized or something. I look up my sites in the SE's and see plenty of links so the site is definitelylisted but one day I'm in the top ten then not even top 30.
I saw this w/Yahoo! Directory too. I simply can not keep up w/all of the changes. It's really hard to get a top listing and stay there. Even using SEO tools such as WebPosition is not working for me. I have followed all of their rules and not getting the ranking that I want or once had.
Is the link back THE ONLY way to stay at the top???? What else can we look at as far as optimizing and the like?

The whole idea behind providing relevant results is to not allow webmasters, or at least trying to stop them, from being able to manipulate the results and show up in whatever position they want for whatever keywords they want.
The world can only have one of two things. Either really crappy results that are meant to push products and nothing more or relevant results that are meant to provide you with true answers.

I had an auction site of PR 5 at one point simply by buying v.cheap hits off ebay, my PR after about 2 months went from 2 to 5 and I started getting #1 listings all over google. I spent about $10-$20 per month. Much cheaper than back links.

On the negative:
That last Google updates have happened when GOOG shares were around $175 and this time they were right around $200. So my guess is that when Google shares get to around $225 is when the next update will happen.
Sellouts?
Most of my sites/pages dropped 1 point in PR this update. I got a few higher PR link partner since last update. Some of them are PageRank 6/10 or better links pages. This tells me that Google's standards for PR are getting higher, that is, it is getting harder to get PR.
