Anyone want to take a wild guess at the next date we are likely to see a page rank update?. End of the year? Next year?

Currently google is still spidering away on our website, its having ZERO effect on our positions as yet so the sooner the better as far as im concerned. It looks to me that google aim for once a quarter if you are lucky. I guess thats to ensure they can extract as much cash as possible from sites under Pay per click knowing full well that New sites wont get decent positions for at least a year!

Meanwhile it looks like MSN are updating the beta search all the time as they go. I get less hits from MSN spider buts its nice to see the updates on an almost daily basis. If MSN continue to do this after the change over they will out perform google over time in my opinion (Google fans wont want to read that) and thats becuase Google take far to long to update pagerank which alters your positions and hence MSN will be able to deliver the most recent search results data, from all websites, as at the search date.

Google need to improve the duration of page rank updates, but i guess that would cost them a lot of money, but on the other side of the coin if they dont, MSN will clean up and its bye bye google!

I cant see Google pushing another update before the new year..florida was a complete disaster and now with them being public....no way. I dont think they can afford another update going bad.

I'm putting money on Jan 5th - but it doesn't really matter the PR we are seeing is not relevant to the googler.

Can you explain what you mean? I understood that the page rank bar shows exactly what the PR is for each page of your site. When an update is done the PR can change

there have been rumors spreading lately that the pr shown on the toolbar is not your real current pr, it's an old un-updated pr. Your real pr is only known to google, and from time to time they update the toolbar's pr, but the real one is updated more frequently.

Mark,

Interesting Post. Not sure if i buy it to be honest.

Im sure that you get some movement after a page rank update once you have a decent page rank with decent page rank pages joining you but i just think its a case of Google extracting information all the time but then only processing that information once a quarter or so. I dont think it has a different PR in use, i just think it only updates it when its ready

In the sector my site is in the top 30 results have not changed since the last update. I conclude:-

1. Google doesnt update on a regular basis (despite it having the information to do so) because it wants to maximise pay per click income and doesnt want vast changes so that websites have to pay more to get a listing.

2. Google is very simple, key word match, content volume, volume of quality links wins.

I just think the rumours are just that - rumours oh and spin so that SEO companies and the like can make the whole thing look more complicated than it is.

The sooner MSN get the search engine launched the better. The more pressure on google to perform the better as far as im concerned.

(Anyway, i think google will be took out by mircosoft eventually anyway. The current shareprice is a joke and after that comes crashing down, microsoft will be able to go hostile on the cheap!)

RichTC,
I agree with mark. I have moved a site from 30 in the serps to 5 over the last two weeks with no PR update. Their have been no onsite changes only change were new high PR backlinks. So Google is giving my site more weight, but PR on the bar is the same. Anecdotal evidence, I know. But that is all I have to work with.

go beta.search.msn

Anthem,

Thanks for that. That is very interesting.

I just dont feature on google at all yet despite the spider is at my site every day. If fact currently its updating more than every day. Ie. 00.03am and then at 18.40 on the same day.

The bot has made over 18,000 hits since the start of the month on my site yet i still dont list anywhere

Meanwhile the top 50 positions in the sector my site is under have not changed. Hence why i concluded incorrectly that nothing changes untill after a PR update.

Anthem, may i ask if your site is listed in DMOZ, because i do wonder if this has a significant bearing on a site position changing

some are, some are not. If you will pm the website address to me I will take a look. I've had similar problems on multiple sites: activecowboy.com is a site I own that Google will not show. I also have duplicate content site for a music store that is not showing because of it's duplicate content.

It took a friend of mine 6 months to get listed on Google. Google crawled his website everyday without any luck. Then one day I was searching Google and his website came up. The weird thing was that he was listed on every major search engine apart from Google.

This is a little off the subject, but a representitve from Google called me to ask about my Froogle listings. How much traffic to I get from Froogle, are they buying, etc? I fiqured they would have more information about this then I do (clicks). Maybe their focus is on so many other things right now. Who knows, but it just seemed odd to me.

My experience is that it currently takes a couple of months to get into Google. Google seems to spider pages frantically at the start of every month, then around the middle of the month there seems to be a temporary index update, which reverts after a couple of days. Then, a month later, what was temporary seems to move across.

This is only what I've noticed with my sites and it probably depends on where your site is, but since August I have noticed this pattern of frenzied activity, temporary update then a month later the the temporary is moved across.

So, if your site appears in the index without a description for a couple of days in the middle of the month, it'll probably make it to the real thing the following month!

Anyone else agree with this pattern or is it just coincidence with my sites?

We have always got sites listed much faster than that. How did you try to get listed, links or manual submit?

My photo gallery moved from third to second within the last two weeks.

Hear's an interesting coincidence. There is a jump in the stock price right around the time of the last PR update. Click here for more details Is that before or after the update. I don't remember the exact date.

Doesn't really change my opinion of Google all that much.

BTW Google shares are up 8.24 today, closing at 178.69
