I realise now that the best and really the only way that i am going to go up the rankings in google it backlinks. But my question is where do I get them from?

The question is: do you think people are interested in your website? If yes, promote your website and people will link to it. Tell stories, offer a free download of a widget, give valuable advices....good content creates backlinks.

You are thinking backwards.

you need to network with others in a similar niche as your site. build relationships with others who have a good pagerank and try to exchange links. post in forums and reply on blogs with your link in your sig. research some other marketing and networking techniques. Its all about making friends and getting others to find your content worth linking to. maybe create a blog on your site with similar content. keep at it. pagerank doesn't happen overnight.

It technically could. - but again, what has PR to do with anything?
You could get a poor irrevelant PR 5 link and a great relevant PR1 link.

Let's forget about PR once and for all and focus on QUALITY.

Will the backlink be beneficial to the visitors of that website? Which kind of traffic is it going to bring. Think demographic, think niche, think potential customers instead of being blinded by PR like the mass.

Didn't you hear? Page Rank determines your value as a human being. People with a PR of less than 3 aren't being allowed to eat, and people without PR 2 are illegal to breathe. You need a whopping PR 6 to be allowed to have children these days!

well, the odds of having friends with websites that are related to your site is not that good. though if you have time I guess its one way to use it.

If you want to build backlinks than just have patience and start building with slow pace. Most easiest way is Forum posting but only quality and relevant. You should contribute towards growth of the forum not as burden.

Directory Submission, Do follow blog comments, Social Bookmarking are some other way which can give you good backlinks as well.

So just start with one way and on the way you will learn different method as well.

Define "good" because since the last time I checked, spamming doesn't go in that category.

Try many different methods, see what works for yourself, just build quality content, network, and you should do fine

I always tend to build backlinks according to how a site is rank.

PR0 - Basic link building will drastically improve ranking.

1. Directory Submission, General Directories, Niche Directories, Blog Directories, RSS Directories.
2. Comment on a few high volume Blogs - may not inprove PR but will send you some traffic.
3. Build Some forum links to your site. The Signature is a great way to do this.
4. Make sure to attain some Deep Links

Your also must make sure your site is set up correctly.

For example. Here is a great way to set up a site.

1. Home Page - Every site has a home page and attaining links to your home page is easy.
2. Blog - I just about always include a Blog in my sites and i install them into a virtue-directory under the main domain. Like so: www.yourdomain.com/blog. The main reason is that I can then build Deep links to my Blog by the means of submitting it to Blog Directories.
3. SiteMap - Always include a Sitemap. Google suggest it and it also helps your visitors find the information they are looking for.
4. RSS feed - Sign up for a Feedburner account and submit your feedburner feed to RSS Feed Directories. This also helps build even deeper links to actual Blog posts.

This should be enough to get your PR and SERP position on the right track. But keep in mind the SEO is a never ending process! This is just Basic SEO practices that can and will improve your ranking.

what about advertising? Is it worth spending the money to do it?

There are also several link exchange sites, like linkmetro, that make it sim,ple to do 2-way reciprocal link exchanges.

My suggestion is do work Link Building and also Link Exchange it's better way for you.

I think Paid link is a good advise for you but it is wrong way for seo then you should do proper link exchange with your industry site.

You don't need backlinks, you need good content...then natural backlinks will follow.

Too many webmasters dig up backlinks anyway they can and waste a lot of time doing this. It's a$$ backwards! Create content WORTH linking too FIRST, then backlinks will come.
