Google is whare backlinks really count. I just thought I'd share this info to save webmasters time and AVOID MISTAKES.

Getting Backlinks Naturally
Many backlinks are achieved the natural way. When your website provides users with useful content, webmasters and website owners will often link to these useful web pages (on your site) for their website visitors to use. Most often then not, these sites that link to yours naturally are relevant to your sites content. Also known as "targeted backlinks", these types of backlinks are the most beneficial when generating quality traffic from them. Getting natural backlinks, however, is a slow process. These are built mostly on trust and gaining trust takes time.

Building Backlinks
One of the acceptable ways of building quality backlinks is listing your site in directories, posting in forums, and submitting to article directories. What you want to avoid is link farms, spam sites or sites that host illegal content, purchasing links in bulk, etc.

Getting Listed in Directories
Getting listed in directories like DMOZ and Yahoo is a must because this is a way to get some quality backlinks for free and your site is easily noticed by search engines and potential visitors. Generally inclusion in these directories is free but the drawback is that sometimes you have to wait months before you get listed...or not listed at all. Top directories like DMOZ and Yahoo have strict guidlines when submitting, so follow the rules carefully. Yahoo also has a "pay for review" option that is costly and does not mean you will get listed. I would suggest submitting the free listing first, then wait a few months to see if your site is listed before considering the paid option.

Article Directories and Forums
Generally search engines index forums so posting in forums is way great way to get quality backlinks. Join forums with subject matter relevant to your site, add your URL (link) with anchor text of your choice to your forum signature, then contribute to the discussions. Be sure that you abide by the forum rules before you post anything...and do not post just for the backlinks. Forum administrators are not stupid. If your are truly contributing, your posts will not get deleted and you won't get banned. Also, sometimes administrators do not allow links in posts, unless they are relevant ones, so it is best to leave your link in your signature.

Submitting articles to directories can be more time-consuming then posting in forums. If you can write good articles on subjects related to your site, it's well worth the backlinks.

Feed them with RSS
Offer free content through RSS feeds to interested sites. When the other site publishes your RSS feeds, you will not only get backlinks to your site, but potentially a lot of visitors. Publishers of the feeds in return get to add relevant content to their site. It's a "win-win situation".

The directories mentioned still have link juice (DMOZ and Yahoo). Social bookmarking 99% of the time gives backlinks in profiles that have no link juice (all nofollow). Link bait is under "natural links", and "article marketing" is under "Article Directories and Forums".

Getting listed in DMOZ is nigh on impossible these days. Unless you buy a domain name that is already listed. Sad but true. Google still gives a heavy weighting to DMOZ Directory however.

This is true, so submit and forget.

I discovered that posting about known celebrities will earn you backlinks (generally by linkbaiting) site owners from a fansite or celebrity site will link up your article and voila, instant backlink.

That's why only DMOZ and Yahoo are listed...they still carry weight.

I agree about DMOZ, I find it incredible that Google even cares about it considering that many editors are in fact getting paid off by webmasters to get entry into the directory.

But tell in one page of single thread have around 40 - 50 signature links. Google take all them in their notice or just few ones. I am asking this because I am not getting backlinks from many forum and I think this can be one reason as well. All are Do Follow forums.

40 to 50 links of any kind on a page means your link gets 1/40th or 1/50th of the link juice available from that page. Considering that brand new pages (hosting threads) on a forum have no link juice, you're wasting your time.

Now Google stopped giving preference to Yahoo as well. So in nutshell we can say that now google is now avoiding directory submission. These directories already polluted the internet soil. Even 14 years old kis established his directory and earning good money.

So it should be stopped as this one is effecting the result of search engine.

Seriously speaking, you can't be just ditching them all? Social bookmarking - losing it. Article dirs - worthless. Forums - crap. So where's the link juice hidden then?

At least one good way to get high pr link is to throw a hub instead of an article submission.. a hub with score >70 will have dofollow on the outbound link. And 70 is pretty easy to get.. photo, text, random rss feed and you got it.

Helpful and informative tips but there are more way also to get back links.

I think that's the classic way not the smart way of building backlinks.
