bleed they do count. Google still knows about your links. They just don't show you all the ones they know about. Not all links are the same of course and some will help more than others, but they don't need to show in a Google link: query in order for them to count.
One more time since people seem to not be reading my earlier post. Google never shows all the links they know about for your site when you search via a link: query. Don't worry about what that query shows. It's not accurate.
If you want to know more about the links Google has founding pointing to your site sign up for Google's Webmaster Tools. You'll get a much better count of links. You can also check Yahoo since Yahoo will give you a better count of links.
