Seems as though there is a bit of mixed opinion with PR here. To me I'm not entirely up to date with SEO techniques but essentially I take PR with a pinch of salt, its not significant, it's not insignificant either. It gives me a general understanding of how well connected that website may be links wise, but it also gives me an estimate in regards to the websites reputation. Tell me if I'm just kidding myself or wrong otherwise...

Plus, the thread can make an easy reference link for people that get the definition wrong.
You're right, but if it gets out to just one person you did your job. But most will not understand.

Wow thanks just we do not have a better way to determine with which wetsite we should trade links,so we use PR to measure the value of a website, just we do not have a better way.

There is a way to determine whether it makes sense to link to a particular site or not, and it's relevancy. Does the site make a contribution of some kind to the overall content of your resource? If yes, then why not add it, if not, why bother.

That's interesting. Need to think on this again to understand fully..
But I have noted that the PR is a consequence of the popularity of a page and not vice versa. Thus we can conclude that our site is popular when we have a good rank. That is certainly true.

Don't you agree?

It depends on what your definition of "popular" is. Your PR3 page could be due to 35,000 crappy links or it could be due to a couple of better links. Which one is more popular? Can "popularity" be inherited? Google's definition of popularity says it can.

I dis-agree completely. Popularity is a measure of how many people come to the site. PR means nothing.

See this post of someone with PR6 and no traffic:

Yours is a wrong attitude to start at a time when you are drowned! Below article will help you a lot and change your life forever.
How to Make Lots of Money During a Recession By Steve Pavlina (Most Successful Online Entrepreneur)

It is long and will take about half an hour to read. But it is really worth the time and will give you powerful paradigm shifts at a time when you need it most .

Of course I had read it already and follow it in my own life.

By popularity, I mean being known and famous among communities and social circles. For a website, that is having a wide readership, ability to get lot of organic traffic constantly, being known by many online users etc.

Why didn't Ben in that thread give the url of his site? He is not having any clue as to what the reason is. But I am not having any clue as to what his site is and if he is searching for non-relevant keywords to look for his website.

Having PR is based on inbound links and that does not necessarily mean traffic. But it helps traffic than without it. Traffic comes if somebody looks for something.

For example, there can be 10 websites out of which 5 have PR and get traffic and five have PR that do not get traffic. You can look at both of these only and not consider other factors to conclude that PR is irrelevant. But I look at other factors as well and take reasonable conclusions that are realistic.

If you look through the forum, you'll see plenty of examples where sites with lower PR rank higher in search results, many posts show no correlation to traffic. So, yes, I would argue that PR is irrelevant.

Then again, my general strategy is to focus on people instead of search engines. It's worked pretty well so far.

"Being famous" is not a measurable value, how do you determine that someont is 9 out of 10 famous and someone is 7? At any rate it all stumbles into backlinks. Traffic is not taken into account, at least by google.

The PR of a page is the sum of all the PR passed by its inbound links. PR is held at page level, not site level.

If all the time spent discussing something as unimportant as PR was spent on something actually worthwhile...

If you put your site in a new directory then it will probably have no PR but a high PR site will cause that page to be indexed quickly where a low pr site might take forever or have that page deindexed soon after!

I don't think that's possible.

The most important thing is - PageRank is considered separately for each page. To get higher PR you need to have higher backlinks(quality matters more). Whenever a webmaster look for exchanging links then he should take care of PR with which the link will be changed.
