Hi, I wonder if someone could clear this up for me. If I create an article on Squidoo, or a similar site, and then use the same material to create another article (copy and paste) on another website, does Google regard that as "duplicate content" ? And if so, could I use the same material but edit it, to avoid this ? And is there really a "penalty" involved ? Thank you, Mickmac

Yes, it is a duplicate; and the duplicate content won't rank well in SERPs so there is a penalty. Make sure I'd try to change it substantially by doing a complete rewrite of the article. But if it's just for backlinks it might not be worth the bother.

You might take a look at the link Chrishirst dropped in this thread... there's also a sticky in this forum about duplicate content. Google could care less if you have duplicate content. Each page stands or falls on it's own no matter what content it has.

Must avoid using duplicate content.........as your site may be banned by google anytime.

Do some research and use only origional content to your site for better results.

Google won't ban your site for duplicate content, unless you're trying to use duplicate content to get better SERPs. All Google will do is rank the page it deems most relevant, and ignore the other pages. But you're right, duplicate content is just a waste of time.

Here'e the link from chrishirst again http://www.webmaster-talk.com/the-go...e-content.html

Well..........I think its better to get information from the web and write that in your own words to add content to your website and also remember to add your keywords appropriately.

I would definitely recommend re-writing the article your rankings can be affected if you keep publishing the same content i have seen evidence of this.
