Google Backlinks

Hi guys,

I have looking at the links that link back to my website from various search engines and I can't understand something. Google, is the best search engine, but it only shows that 4 sites link back to mine... I have at least 50 different sites pointing back to my site and other search engines pick that info up except Google. Even my own company website doesn't come up in the linkback list provided be Google and I have placed the link there personally 2 years ago!!!

Do you know why this is happening? Is there something that I can do to help boost by linkbacks in Google SERP?

If you're using the link: operator in Google you won't see all the links Google knows about. That's just the way it is. Better to use Google Webmaster tools.

Google wouldn't show up exactly how many backlinks.
you should use webmaster tools

Thanks for the tip Adulu. I feel much better now that I saw the backlins through the Google WebMaster tools...

It's this imaginary metric called "link popularity" that people waste days chasing after a number.

But what can you use the backlink count for?

It doesn't tell you how the SEs weight the links.
It doesn't tell you what links count and what don't.
It doesn't tell you if those links turn a profit for the pages.
It doesn't tell you if those links send visitors.

All in all it's a lot of messing about trying to find a number that tells you absolutely NOTHING

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't link poupularity help with your page ranking in general? So, if it helps with your page ranking, could you say that it tells you nothing?

Actually. No it doesn't.

The anchor text of the links is what counts for ranking with Google ONLY. And simply knowing the number does not tell you how many or which of those links actually do "help".

Well........google is so strict in terms of relevancy to show backlinks of a site.
and it shows most relevant links as backlinks that's whay google show's the lowest no of backlinks for a site. Google time updation of backlinks is also greater than other SE's.

However it does not mean that google does not know about your links.
It knows about all of your links on the web but shows only most relevant links as backlinks. You can check your all links by using webmaster tools.

No "Google" doesn't CARE about relevancy, only numpty link exchangers think SEs care about "relevancy"

No again, the SEs "know" about the links they have found, may be all of them probably won't be.

And if you run a link: search, you'll probably find that they are from the crappiest bunch of pages imaginable, including a lot of scraper sites.

The reason the link: command is broken?

It stops others examining what links are to what pages and using that information in reverse engineering.

Thanks for all the infos here. I'm confused also with my backlinks. I have 500+ in Yahoo, yet only 6 in Google. Well I'll check on the Google Webmaster Tool now.

Remember, Google knows about most of your links as other search engines (you can check it through Webmaster tools) but shows only selected most relevant links as backlink through link operator.
