Hey folks, i'm not sure if this is the right spot for this so if not please forgive me!

I'm looking to create a site that gives registered users (will need the register option as well) the ability to post buy and sell, coming events, etc to a website.

Being new to the PHP/MySQL world, i don't have a clue where to start.

Is this something I can do myself over time? If so, where would i look to get help?

I may be biting off more than I can chew here, but it's a challange for me, and I'm not making any money off the site right now to pay somebody.

Any help/direction/tips you can offer me would be greatly appreciated and gladly accepted!

Thanks all!

Welcome to the world of PHP & MySQL!

If you wanjt to learn PHP, go to php.net, or buy a book (I can't give you any titles, because I only own Dutch ones). For MySQL, well, I learned it from a book, but the complete documentation is available here: mysql.org

You can learn, but it will take lots of time and experience. I suggest you use Google and find some OpenSource (free) scripts to do that for you. Im 100% sure that there are such scripts.

Doing it yourself is...uhmm. You must master php and mysql, a registration system would require high security, anti mysql-injection, cross-site hack, .....

Get an open source script for your project. If you need to do any modifications then goto elance.com and hire someone who can help you modify the program.

Long term, it would be helpful if you could learn PHP and MYSQL. If you have any programming experience then you should get a good book on the subject. If not, then take a course...

And without knowledge, how do you know the free script you pick will handle these things?

I like PHP object oriented, try it. You will have your own knowledge based in the Lib.

Yeah, normally I go to php.net to get some snippet. However, I also download manual in CHM format for off-line reference.
