When you get a hosting plan, what percentage of the space should be allowed fot the database? So if you got a hosting plan that gave you 5 gigs of storage, what size datebase would you be allowed to have? Is 100 megabyte database limit OK? Or, should you be allowed to have a larger database?

Thanks for your input in advance.

It depends what you are planning to do. The database size isn't really detirmined by how much storage you need.

A site that consists of 100gigs of pages might not need a database, But a site that consists of 1mb of files might need a 100 gig database.

Best thing to do is start with an average hosting package and see if you need to upgrade in the future.

Thanks stOx,

I am looking at the beginner plan from 1and1 webhosting right now. Anyway it seems like 100 MB out of a 5gig storage is a little stingy.

create your own hosting account try http://www.dosdawgs.com
admin-at-dosdawgs-dot-com for hosting information, that is called an upsell tactic. i have never really sized my database, i know that mysql gives you some issues when your sql file gets to be too large, so be careful with that. i have had php nuke sites as large as 255 tables with astronomical amounts of data in them. i have never considered space to be an actual problem even with web pages, the real biter i have had was bandwidth. they always wanted to charge me for more bandwidth. space constraints on web pages is something of a farce. if you consider one html or php coded page will amount to all of 50k or so, i cant do that kind of math, but you figure out how many pages you could have on 1000mb of storage space. enuff to choke an elephant i presume.

anywho, good luck in your endeavors

If you don't have something specific in mind, that's plenty. An earlier post explained how it's really not connected to how many pages you have. So if you're only thinking a database is something you might want down the line, you don't want to overpay for something you won't use; cross that bridge when you get to it. On the other hand, if you have a use in mind, and think about how to break it up into "the relational model" you'd be surprised how far 100 MB goes (, especially if your system isn't highly transactional ).

I have a site with a Microsoft host and SQL Server '05, with 100 MB allocated for the data files and t-logs. While I'm not exactly thrilled with that, it's not a problem. The site doesn't attract much traffic. I'm conservative with indexes, and store a lot of data in the filesystem instead of the database. With a few hundred users it will be a few years before the database fills. At that point, I'll go shopping, and I'm sure it will be much cheaper.
