Hi,

I currently sell Wedding Invitation cards. What I am having to do at the moment, is when I want to upload a new image to my site, I am finding that I am repeating what I am doing a number of times. For example - If you have a look at my site - http://www.kankotri.co.uk - then navigate to 'Categories' - 'Hindu' - 'Kankotri', you will see that I am using tags for images. As mentioned, what I am having to do at the moment is to copy and paste the code in every page that is required i.e. there are certain cards that will be tagged 'Gold', 'Red', 'Portrait' and so on. What I am doing at the moment is uploading the image to the main index pages, then copying and pasting the code on the other pages. The problem that I am experiencing with this is that if a card is no longer available, I am spending a lot of my time going throught the different pages and deleting the code. I am thinking that a database might be beneficial for me, but I have no idea where to start. Can anyone help please?

Thanks,

Well, yes, your site would be easier to manage with a database, but only if those changes are going to occur regularly.

If you delete or add a new card once in a year, I'd tend to say that you don't need to use a database.

First, a database strengthen the way you have to work.
A database is a fixed model, it cannot easily be changed once put in place.

Second, you will need to put every cards information you actually have on your site in this database, and this will take time too.

Third, your site will need to be redone, and even if itself, it's not an hard task, the devil lies in the shady corners.
And having a nice, easily usable and fast system, even if it can be build in a matter of a couple of days, will cost you.

So, a database can give you a simplified work when it comes to do changes in your site, but it will come at a certain price.
It's for you to see what this price should be for it to be interesting.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. It does make sense what you have said. What I am looking to do is to have a website, whereby I can add on cards fairly easily, new pages are created by themselves (e.g the user can choose to see 8 cards per page, 16 cards per page, 32 cards per page or all cards on the same page). Also they can rearrange the list of cards by price etc. I have seen this on a number of websites, but from what I could see, they all use ASP? I am looking for some easy to use software that might be able to help me with this. I would still like to use my current CSS though.

Anyone got any ideas on where I can start?

Thanks,

You can install wordpress and then do some workaround with your cards placing them into Red, Gold, Silver, whatever etc. categories and supplying them with tags which will represent price. At least this will save you a lot of manual work.
