prostoalex writes "Is it a good idea to go into Computer Science? Yes, there are certainly pending labor shortages as Indian companies outsource to the United States, but speakers of Stanford Computer Forum generally agree that it's a good career choice. From the article: 'To ensure job security, students must learn business, communication and interpersonal skills, Vardi recommended. The personal touch will become as important as technological expertise, he said. "There are jobs galore," agreed Suzanne Bigas, assistant director of the Stanford Computer Forum.'"</img>

I always find things like this funny. Sure it's worth it if you're interested in computers and computer science. And it was never worth it if you weren't.

Over the years I've seen majors go hot and cold and it's going to continue forever. Computer Science was the major while that bubble was growing and then the bubble burst and it's not good to be a compueter scientist. It just means that in a few years there will be a shortage of people with computer science degrees and it will be a hot major again.

Or we could all try learning the things that interest us and make that our profession. You can make money doing anything.

All I have to say about Comp Sci degrees is this: I don't have one, and I'm fine.

Education <> Experience <> A clue <> Intelligence.

I'm certainly not saying anyone needs a degree. I know I don't have a comp sci degree. I just think it's funny how there's always been talk since I can remember about one major being hot and another not being hot and then a few years later it switches.

If you're going to college and trying to decide what degree to pursue pick something you'll enjoy doing. Even if it's not the hot major of the moment it quite possibly will be by the time you finish school. If not the second you graduate probably not too long after.
