I don't think this is a Facebook vs. someone fight, I think this is just another field for the much broader Microsoft vs Google one.
It's almost like a Cold War between the two companies - it reminds me (as an ex-GCSE history student) of what the USA and Russia did in Middle East in the late 60s and 70s, where they supported opposing teams, Israel and the Arabs. Then there was the space race etc.
This to me is just like a technology version of all of that - both giants are fighting each other, whether openly or in other areas such as social networking.
