i reckon there should be some auction threads on here, or a section. That would be fun
eg for domain names etc. auction them off as an alternative to advertising.
Getting a bit bored or Ebay :|

At the present, we have a forum to sell domain names and sites. Even though they are not auctions, you can list a price there and sell them.

My past experience with auctions of forums is that the auction becomes a "chat" thread with lots of posts. Sometimes a member is posting at the same time as another member and parts of the auction get lost. Then if someone is skipped, that starts more problems. With the amount of posts that it can generate, the thread could become a resourse hog. It also can be a way to run up a post count with meaningless posts.

Example:
Member 1: I have www.noname.com for sale. What will you give me?
Member 2: I'll give you 10 cents. (unnecessary post)
Member 3: I'll buy it for $20 (gets missed in the posting)
Member 1: You got to be kidding. (referring to Member 2)
Member 3: I'm serious. You won't get more than that. (thinks his is not enough)
Member 1: I'll just keep it, I was hoping to get at least $20. (frustrated)
Member 2: Okay, I'll give you $5 for it. (will get banned soon)

I'm against having auctions on a forum due to my past experience with the problems that can arise from them.

To Chris, I suggest you follow the rules of the above mentioned forums and list them with a price. If someone wants them, then they are sold. If it's too high, you may get a request for them with an offer. This can be handled with PM's, too.

See, their is no need for a web site auction forum. Thier are sites that do that, ya'll need to stop trying to dominate the internet, and you should focus more on helping people and other things. That is one thing that has drawn me away from using this forum so much, is because everything is about money. This web site has like 50 advertising links, and they have like a few seperate forums devoted to telling people how to make money. What happen to webmasters being interested in the acual fun of running a site. I just hate how the web design world is so d*** greedy now days. I am old fasion, and I design for peoples pleaseure, yes, i do advertise, but I don't dedicate my site to making money like this and most of the web design world does.

First, I agree with you that I don't think we need an auction forum. In regards to trying to "dominate the internet," we don't. But if we could dominate the industry we are in then I sure would love to. I try to make the best website I can devoted to that topic. This website is in business to provide help and usefulness to our members, but it is also part of a business. We don't always do everything right and often things change.

That's not true. We do have a Marketplace which is about money but this is for our members, not us. There are plenty of forums on graphics, design, and coding that have NOTHING to do with making money.

Wrong again. There are a bit less than 50 of them and less than 20 of them are actual "ads". Many are link partners with ontopic sites. I removed the top banner and replaced it with 8 links. It takes up the same amount of space. The right side bar is new but this is for the benefit of our advertisers or partners (will discuss this later)

It is commendable that some of your sites are not about making money. This site isnt "about making money" either but that does not mean I should not be able to try and make money from it. I am sure you started your web design and hosting site for charity also right?

Frankly I find most of your comments hypocritical and without much warrant. You throw in one or two sentences that make since with a bunch of fluff that doesnt. You like to bash or attack our forums (as you have several times in the past and maybe I am wrong but I always get a since of jealousy from your posts). You do things your way and I'll do them mine. I'm sorry you don't like members who are in the business to make some money. I AM in the business to make money and support a family with supplemental income AND provide useful content and help to our members (which I believe we do). The majority of your own new threads were about advertising your own site in some way.

I have told you before, if you don't like our forums you don't have to come here and you don't have to post. I do like feedback and you are entitled to your opinion. Unfortunately your feedback it is usually wrong, but that is just my opinion.

If your intention is to try and help our forum, you always seem to do it in the wrong way.

Take Care

HOT D*** I think that could be considered a b**** slap. LOL I know I complain about this site alot, I am just trying to better it, their where a few points in your speech that I didn't like at all, and some of them where just a b**** slap to me which I did diserve.

No offence, but that is a rude comment, feedback can not be wrong. Feedback is suggestions, I am not sure how a suggestion can be wrong. I know you don't like me one bit, but all I am doing is trying to help out a forum that needs help.

I can understand that a web site of this size, need to have a income associated with it, but you need to find other ways to do it. All the text link that appear in the main focus of the site make it look like it is greedy, and personally, I would be turned away thing that this site is not out to help people, but out to make money. YOu really need to fix this, I think the site would benifit from this a lot. You should look into providing a service to make moeny, not just to have text links splattered all over your site.

Ok, one, I didn't realize you saw me comments as bashing, I am simple trying to help. I am sorry, but I am the type of person that dedicates their life to helping people and helping their sites. I have tought many web development classes in my life, and I Mod at the largest Webmaster forum on the net. I am all about helping. As for the jealousy, what is that about, I have had my fair share of sites in my time and all have been successful, I am not jealous of a site like this.

The main reason I hang around this forum is because I enjoy helping people and I like to do so at forums like this one. I am sorry you are seeing all my comments as bashing, but I was just trying to help. I am the type of person who tells what is on his mind, it might be mad sometimes, but I am never trying to bash.

OK, I hope I didn't turn you into that LOL Sorry it was such a long rant. I hope not everyone on here hates me

Atlien, I don't think you are hated by anyone here. No inference here, but being disliked it not being hated.

My understanding of your previous post was that it was an attack on Webmaster-Talk, or maybe it was only a bash. You said that we need to quit trying to dominate the internet and focus on helping people. Since we are not trying to dominate and we are trying to help people, that was taken as an attack. Then to continue the attack, you started on something else against the forum.

If you wanted to suggest something to help this forum, you might want to consider the ways you suggest it. I'm sure you've learned that by now with your vast experience on the largest webmaster forum on the net. (That last sentence could be taken a couple of different ways and I stated it like that to prove that very point!) There are ways to say things to help, and there are ways of saying things that may help but will not be taken because of the way it was offered.

I hope that helps for everyone that reads and may want to make suggestions for this forum, for any forum, or even for site reviews. Consider your delivery.

Dave

Like I said, I speak my mind, If stuff comes out the wrong way then that is not my fault, I am the type of person that will say your site sucks if it is not good, I tell it like it is. I think most of the stuff you call bashing, is felt by alot of members as the truth, they are just not the type of people that will straight up say it like I do. I will try to be more cautious about how I say stuff, but that is just how I am, sorry about all the confusion. When I said stop trying to dominate the internet, I was say that you need to stop worring about making sure you cover every asspect of the web design world, and put mroe focus on actually helping people. The webmaster forum I work at has like 5 links, and the admins are all the most helpful people on the forum. They don't worry about money and making sure every corner is covered, they put most of their time into actually getting to know members and personally help them. You need to aim more of your time on actually helping people and not worry about the site layout and all the advertising, and focus on the members and their questions.
