How points are earned

My 'points' level exceeds my 'posts' level. How many points do you get per post, as it does not seem to be an exact amount each time... how is it determined? Also, since this is a webmaster forum, how can I set up a points/store system in my vBulletin?

Point values may vary. There is a certain amount awarded per post and another amount per thread started. You may also be awarded points or given points.

The point is, keep up those quality posts and earn more points.

Great. It's indeed cool. But how does more points help Chief ? I would like to sponsor some gifts like free domain names, free website hosting and some other things for some people here at these forums who do really well. Any suggestions ?
