By default, I think you should set up the forums to send an email notification. Just in the past couple weeks, I've seen numerous people sign up, ask for code, and never come back to get it.

Maybe that's not a good enough reason to do it, but in the long run, user participation will be way up!

i think the ratio between people that would enjoy it and people that would not is in favor of those who'll hate it ...

I agree with OmuCuSucu. If the people want it, it takes literally 5 clicks to enable

People can just as easily turn it off after signing up, as they can turn it on after signing up.

I just think that it will increase the amount of repeat visitors to the site, increasing the number of posts... ultimately creating a more active community.

Like I said, I think it would annoy more users then it would please. If a user wants it they can enable it after registration, or right on the registration page itself.

phillyhotshots i recommend you make a poll in the general discussions forum and see how many use the notifications and how many dont.

if it turns out me and Chroder were wrong, enough people vote and the proportions are right i am sure the admins (meaning Chroder )will do that.

also, take this number into consideration: 13,814 (it is the total number of users on WT).

Yes, feel free to poll the active users (though make sure to note the situation, not simply "do you use" or "do you like", since that's not what we're talking about ).

I'm just looking at it from my POV. I hate getting emails when I didn't explicitly choose to do so. And considering that amount of complaints about spam, I'd think most people wouldn't like it either.

Here's how I would word it, given my reasons for suggesting it.

"If WT were to enable email notification by default, do you think member participation would increase?"

What do you think?

add "at registration" after default.

There's a limit to the number of characters, so I had to shorten it to:

'Would member participation increase, if email notification was enabled @ registration"

Doesn't quite poll users on what the problem is. The problem isn't wether participation will increase (which it probably would), but rather that most people don't like getting emails when they didn't explicitly choose to receive them.

It would only be emails plural, if they neglected to turn it off. In which case it literally takes 5 clicks to disable.

I know it would use up more bandwidth, but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

The poll question will have to be short, but you can explain the poll in the first post. Hopefully, people will read the first post before answering the poll (especially if the poll question says to read the first post ...well, first!).

NuWeb.co.uk, but would you like to have notifications for every thread you start or post delivered by default to your inbox?

i for one wouldn't linke it sine i had some good days with 50 or even 100 posts during my time on WT that would only create chaos in my inbox

I'm not sure if it works that way or not. Maybe Chroder can answer this.

Currently, if you have email notifications turned on, does it only send one notice and not anymore until you visit the forum? Like I get one notice but I don't visit the forum, so I don't get anymore notices until I visit. Or is this another option?
